Just found this group. First post, please humor me. This morning I dug out my older Bryston 4B (I think), amp. It lost a channel about 5 years ago and it's been sitting. I'm thinking I should do something.  But it's so heavy I doubt shipping it somewhere is practical.

I have a little of the original literature, but since I am not the first owner, I might be missing something. I just looked and I cannot easily see the model number on the unit itself. The companion pre-amp is clearly marked, "0-4B." I suspect the main amp is a matched 04 as well.

It worked fine after I got it and was impressed by the unit and sound in the old Bose 901's that came with it. Eventually, it began to blow the fuse for one side. So I suspected a big electrolytic or two had died.

I guess I need to know more about where identification is on the unit, perhaps serial number, etc., then begin to figure how to put life back into it. That is one question for this group.

Second, how well would mine perform compared to newer technology? I've long been a classical music lover, but have been, "out of the loop," technologically for a long time. My present house unit is a 10 year old or so Denon, but I loved the Bryston when she was running.  I'm well into retirement years now, but have decided if my Bryston can run again it would make me younger..............(grin).

Bryston thoughts?

Thanks,
Dennis in E WA state

James will be around soon enough and I hope he can get your unit back to working for you.

Elizabeth, thank you for your reply here as well as your comment on the other forum.  The other forum seems to be getting pretty intense.

I am neither inclined nor willing to try to become a trained, professional person to evaluate the qualities of systems that play back music for us.  I do admire those that do and can.  And I am quite tolerant of opinions that range from mild to wild.  Sometimes it represents good brain-storming and fosters fresh thoughts.  For a half-century and more, I have sometimes listened to systems that touched me inside and drew me in.  Others I would walk away from.  So for me, it's what I, "feel."  That's the best I can do or expect from myself.

I do look at this Bryston and cringe when I think of what it would cost to ship it much less the repair bill.

Cheers,
Dennis

  • The poodle bites, the poodle chews it.
If it's like my 3B the serial number is on the bottom of the amp.

Dunno Dennis I regularly see e-bay sellers that would ship heavy items for reasonable fees, if they can do it you can probably do it too, just don't expect it to be overnight delivery, check all your shipping options.

Otherwise you might try to repair is locally, an amp is not that difficult to diagnose and fix, especially since Bryston provides the schematic diagrams. Of course the old "TV repair" shops are gone for a long time now but the industrial ones are still alive, check your local yellow pages listings for keywords like "industrial electronic & electrical repair, calibration, instrumentation" etc. find a small shop and see whether there's any kind soul there willing to help you.

My experience with Bryston service has been stellar, but I can drive to the factory in 45 minutes.

I'd at least check with Bryston.

It's probably worth fixing, especially if it is less than 20 years old and covered by Bryston warranty.  Your shipping cost is one way to Newport VT and Bryston pays the return shipping.

That flu is really something...I managed to evade it but I got tagged by that other plague that's sweeping the country - that bloody endless cold that fades off and then comes roaring back. Two weeks for me now - and I never catch colds...
Glad you're better.
