Salk Archos

I own HT2-TL's and Songtowers. I find them both to be great speakers, and now that I'm looking at a bedroom set, I wanted to get something a little out of the ordinary but still high quality.

Anyone own or have experience with the Archos? I don't want to spend SS8 type of money, and I find the Archos intriguing. I don't own a tube amp, and so I thought since this was a sensitive design, I might pair them up with an AVA Ultravalve.

The speakers would do double duty, hooked up to a television and providing me with a nice 2 channel listening station in my bedroom. Or should I be looking more at Ellis 1801, WOW1 or HT1-TL? I'm looking to try something a little different.

I might be wrong, but wouldn't a limited baffle design benefit from a wider open space?  The Archos are one of the only Salk speakers I've not heard, and they certainly intrique me as well.  I'll still be saving for SS8's, but that "open baffle" sound sure is sweet, at least based on other speakers I've heard.

How wide is your bedroom, and how far from the walls will you position the Archos if you purchase them?

I got to hear the first incarnation of the Archos a few years back.  That speaker deserves a large space to operate.  It's a high sensitivity design unlike most of the other Salk systems.  Being sensitive, it can run from low power sources as well as behemoth amps thanks to the use of pro-style drivers for the mid and woofer.  "Bedroom speaker" never even entered my mind as a way to describe them.  They are more than capable of filling a very large room with high quality, high level SPL.  And with the open back design of the mid, placing them with a wall behind them might not be the best idea as the close proximity might offer too much reflected energy and color the sound.

But if you have the space available for a large 12" 3-way in your bedroom, they are a wonderful sounding system.

One suggestion might be to move the Songtowers into the bedroom and place the Archos out into the main room.

Jim had a pair of Archos at an AKFest a few years ago that I attended.  I really wanted to buy them, but he said I'd be better served with another type of speaker as it should be placed well out in a room to sound its best.  Wouldn't work in the 15 x 15 living room I had at the time!  I'd still love a pair as they just fill a room with sound.  Unless you have a huge bedroom, I'd go with one of the others you mentioned.

I have a 16x16 bedroom with an adjoining sitting room attached, so its a fairly decent sized space. But it sounds like the Archos deserve better. I'll keep looking :) Or I could move the Songtowers.
