World classical, folk, and jazz

Flor de Piel- Martirio (Sunnyside) con Raul Rodriguez, guitarra.  If you have seen the movie Volver you have heard her and probably didn't know it.  Penelope Cruz was dubbing her voice and song in the scene where she sings and plays.  A gem of a movie (in Spanish), by the way, and Cruz should have gotten Best Actress in 2007 (she was nominated for her role) instead of Helen Mirren and by a long shot, IMO.  Cruz was pretty well known already, but not like now and nothing like Mirren.

A couple of years back, there was a World Music topic here with a good amount of input by Gordy (rip).  He was da man.  Robin (Satfrat) was a frequent contributor, also.  I listen to quite a bit and will contribute if you will.  I know some of ya'll have The Gotan Project.  Ok, then . .

Hey Jim, sorry I'm so long in responding.  I must have had sleeping sickness or something.  Here's a hip pan-African ensemble for you, Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics on the Strut label (CD).  Nobody around composing and playing like this cat and his seven colleagues.  If you like World Jazz this is one you should hear.

That's quite airight, Jim.  Good post.  I'm very fond of his spacey rhythmic group music, too.  Looks like its just me and you, huh.

Bela Fleck: Throw Down Your Heart, Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Vol. 3
Not sure if you'd class this as World, but some interesting stuff here. Makes a difference when you can watch the video and see the folks & locations where they are playing. A lot of music coming out of some very unconventional instruments.

Gordy had many of the best "World" releases....things I never even heard of....  :o :?

I know he did listen to World Cafe...

He liked  Vas.... and Niyaz ... and the singer...Azam Ali .... ...a lot....and others as well.

Best I can say....check All Music .....World Fusion... ...International... ....Worldbeat...

Play the samples...read reviews...see similar artists...can lead to many things. 8)

I think Azam Ali was the singer in VAS and Niyaz...

I listen to a lot of 'world music' , just don't post as much.
Right now I have Amampondo in rotation...a collection of Southern African master percussionists, representing over 3 decades of musical history.

FORMED in 1979 by Mzikantu Zungula "Dizu" Plaatjies, the son of a traditional herbalist and healer, the core group consisted of seven young- boys from the same neighborhood in Langa township outside Cape Town. Twenty years later, Plaatjies, Mzwandile Qotoyi, Mandla Lande, Simpiwe Matole, Blackie Mbizela, Michael Ludonga and Xola Miambo, were still bound by the same dedication to African music and culture.

Amampondo is a hoot... even my grandkids love them. They did one album with British jazz saxophonist Alan Skidmore that's very nice

Speaking of jazz/world, trombone player Roswell Rudd did some interesting albums. One with Toumani Diabate and one with the Mongolian Buryat Band (complete with throat singing) both highly recommended.

The Art Ensemble of Chicago occasionally goes in disguise as the Art Ensemble of Soweto... good music there.

Just picked up this one, sounds great (let's see if I can post a pic)

here's a sample http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Knvy8a6J1y0

Keep the thread alive.  I Luv World Music and can't get enough of new veins of hidden treasures and outlets.

I can't seem to contribute nearly the resources you guys have. Thanks for the links and information it is truly appreciated

Everything I listen to now has come from Pandora. I will utilize some of these links. No fun people in Central OH to trade with or just listen to music anymore. Everybody is just sooo busy... :duh:

Cheers, Mark
