I am wondering if this is just a collectible item or it sounds that good?  :dunno:
I have been enjoying a remastered reissue of this album, new for only 14 bucks!

SET Man

Hey!

$1655.00  :o Yup, that's one pricey LP. Not having heard this pressing I can't say how the sound is. But I think it is more about collectability.

Man! Think of how many not knowing and tossed rare LPs like this one out for CD. Let hope those who did never find out about this  :icon_lol:

Take care,
Buddy  :thumb:

  • Audio - It's all a big fake.
Well, the Analog Productions SACD is only $94, a veritable bargain!

It's sorta like my #2,#3, and #4 X-Men comics that got trashed years ago.  When something gains "collectable" status, price becomes self inflating.

I think I see it available at Elusive Disc for $29 (the SACD).

I'll be content with the vinyl copy I bought 3 or 4 years ago; sold by Acoustic Sounds for $20, it was cut from the Steve Hoffman/Kevin Gray mastering they did for DCC in the 90's I believe. Acoustic Sounds sold these in the standard OJC jacket but on heavier vinyl (180 gram I think) and I've heard of some people buying the OJC and ending up with that pressing as well, although that's a crap shoot and there would be no guarantees.

Looks like that pressing is long gone but Analog Productions appears to be bringing out a $30 version on 200 gram vinyl soon; my guess would be that it is cut from the plates above. Then there's the 45 RPM version at $150 but I believe it's out of print.

Popsike shows almost a dozen copies of the original that have sold between $2,000 and $2,500 in the past few years, so the seller may have been disappointed. At those prices I'm happy to slum it with my copy.

You can always check in with Jazz.collector.com and see what the highest priced Ebay sales are for collectable Jazz vinyl on original labels. The record prices continue to soar as the years go by and the interest in collecting original Jazz albums increases. Many of these higher priced records are going out of the country,no surprise there. It is an international market. There is little consideration of the benefits of the sound quality of these originals,it is the label, pressing and condition and of course rarity that matters.People are assembling collections of complete Bluenote,Prestige,Riverside and many other labels. This is good,as like in fine art, these records will enjoy a long life, outliving all of us,and moving on to new owners.Imagine the prestige(no pun intended) of owning these amazing recordings one hundred years from now when people really do understand and appreciate this incredible music for being the unique art it truly is.
I have seen some people with some very impressive record collections with some unimpressive audo systems,in fact, this appears to be the norm. The record collector and the audiophile seem to be birds that sit on the opposite side of the road, viewing each other from a distance with a mutual agreement of distrust and skepticism. This is not helped by the sad, but true, reality of the audiophile with the impressive system and no taste in music and worse,no desire to mature their musical endeavors. Each generation that comes along has more access to great music of all types, yet seems less and less interested. What is it?
How have we become so stupid? We used to be so cool.
