The integration of Computer, TV, and Hi Fi
« on: 25 Feb 2014, 02:12 am »
First I don't have the space for 5 speakers so home theater is not for me.  Having said that what is the future marriage of these 3 elements.
I only know of 1 person that has a home theater.  How do you get people to integrate the TV, computer, and Hi Fi?  Mine is all separated.

Well there are many options, but first we dont know what you have for basic components, but I'll take a shot anyway.  I have a simple 2 channel system incorporating the 3. My sources (cable tv or streaming) DVD, CDs, computer files go digital out to  >> dac then Left right analog in to pre amp to my active speakers (or into your receiver or int amp) to your speakers

TV signal goes to tv via hdmi of course, i just have tv on mute

but that is just me, tell us more about what you want to accomplish

Look for speakers that image very well and produce deep bass.  Powered or active speakers would also eliminate the need for an integrated amp.  I'd start by looking at an Apple Mac Mini with wireless keyboard/mouse and Super Drive.  Printer and speakers can be wireless.  Size the screen to allow you to read it from where you'll be sitting.  I can imagine the whole setup consisting of a flat panel screen, cable/satellite box, Mini with Super Drive, and a pair of floor standing speakers.  Very simple and compact.

I think you can marry them now. Here are a couple of scenarios:

1. Use an A/V receiver. With HDMI ARC (audio return channel), you can at least in theory (*1) get TV sound through the AVR. Obviously any disc you play. For sound from the computer, modern computers support HDMI output, so there's your audio path, or if you don't like that use an USB-SPDIF convertor into the appropriate AVR input. All AVRs but the cheapest now have networking capabilities and so can (in theory) be used to get files from / be fed files from a network server.

2. Use an Oppo BDP-105 (*2). This will play almost any disc with audio or video on it, hi-res files from USB stick or over the network. Use the USB input from computer or the SPDIF from other digital source. Feed the analog outputs into your pre/amplification. Connect the HDMI out to your TV/display. Not sure about sound from the TV in that scenario, I'd guess feeding the TV's analog out into your preamp would work.

*1. Well it didn't work when I tried it with my setup but since I watch actual TV about once a year I didn't spend much time on it.
*2. I have a BDP-103 not a 105 but I believe I understand how the 105 works.

Hope this helps - ?

A few questions:
1.  What audio/video equipment do you have now?
2.  Where is the computer in your house?
3.  What type of computer do you have, PC or Mac?
4.  How many speakers will you be allowed?
5.  What type of files do you have on your computer you want to access?
