Step Up Transformer -- Busted
« on: 28 Jan 2013, 08:34 pm »
hey,

Just a quick question regarding the robustness / reliability of old setup transformers.

I recently moved my turntable. After re setting it up, there was virtually no volume. Tested every thing in the signal path only to discover that my step up transformer was the issue. I was under the impression that these things were pretty much bomb proof... am I mistaken? Can these just fail? I'm hoping someone with a bit more experience can explain.

I took the unit aprat and there appeared to be no shorts or disconnected wires.

The unit in question is an old Denon AU-250.

Thanks

These transformers see very low voltage and current. So really nothing to "burn them up!".   Most likely a broken lead wire.  Did you take the transformer out of the case to check? Check  continuity from the transformer windings to the corresponding  end of the leads.
