WTC Classic Belt replacement options
« on: 21 Dec 2012, 11:57 am »
I recently had to replace my streched well tempered classic belt with one I purchased from stanalog several years ago.
What a difference a belt change can make just think piano.
First off let me explain why I had to change the belt.
Normally with the old belt a minute would past by before the platter spun to proper speed as indicated by the belt  moving into center of the pulley.  The belt would no longer move to the center of the pulley.  So what I would normally do is move the square motor slightly further away from the table streching the cable a bit wouild cause greater friction and tension would quicken the start up time as the belt would move to the center of the pulley.  But alast the belt would not move into the proper position on the pulley even with coaxing pushing the belt up while riding below the center of the pulley would only cause the belt to ride above the center of the pulley.

With the new belt startups take seconds and stops take seconds where with the old cable the platter would complete a half rotation before stopping.

I physically compared the NOS belt with the worn belt and must say the worn belt was almost two inches longer in length and also has visible  pits of missing material and also when wiped with a dry cloth black material would rub off on to the cloth.  When wiping dust of the table wiping the platter edge where the belt pulls/rides would yield dark material which came from the old belt.  Cleaning the pulley would also yield dark material on my qtip swab.

So now I have read that these types of cables orginally designed for the WTC are no longer being manufactured and in fact any that are found on say ebay are NOS aged poly rubber.  So where can I find a quality recently made WTC belt.  Currently I am not interested in changing the pulley which uses fishing line for a belt.

Also would it be beneficial to the longevity of the belt to mount it on the pulley only when in use?

Go to www.turntablebasics.com
Also, I know your old belt was obviously shot way before you changed it, but you shouldn't be wiping it with a cloth. Dust it with talc to clean.  No wiping.
Best

Thanks for your response threadkiller.
Are you familiar with offerings on ebay and note that one is twice as expensive as the other but not as expensive as what STANALOG charged for the belt I am currently using.

No, I have no idea who or what they are selling. I'd be leary.
The site I sent is reputable, and yes, far far cheaper than the old WTL price of $50.  Less markup?

FWIW, c.2 years ago I replaced the vdh cartridge on my WTT&A at David Lewis Audio, Phily, PA. I mislaid the original belt. He sourced a new one for a different tt which appears & functions identically to the lost one so far as I can tell.

good luck,
