Surprised by hum after 9B-ST installation
« on: 27 Dec 2012, 09:44 pm »
I stumbled across a 9B-ST (approx 30kg) and couldn't resist. It replaces a Rotel RB-985 (approx 15kg) which has served me well.

What I thought was a simple 1 hour swap out proved to be more complicated than I bargained for. I was concerned about the additional weight and had to switch the amplifier to the lowest shelf, exchanging its position with the preprocessor. Apart from requiring my whole AV rack to be rewired, I found that the preprocessor was too deep for its new shelf. So off to the hardware store to get parts to make a new shelf, which also required it to be painted black to match the other shelves.

Two days later, everything is reconnected, only to find a 60Hz hum in most of the speakers. Huh?

I start by disconnecting the amplifier to verify no inherent hum. Check.

Connect one of the RCA patch cords, but leave the other end disconnected. Hum! Huh?

I recalled that the centre speaker didn't hum. I connect the centre speaker patch cord, and leave the other end disconnected. Silence. Ok.

Did I just get (un)lucky with the humming patch cords ?  Just the right impedance to make a 60Hz antenna ?

I think you might be going about this incorrectly.

When you said you disconnected the amplifier what exactly did you mean?

The first step should be turn amp off, wait until it plays down.  Then disconnect the input cables to the amp at the amp so the amp is only connected to the speakers.  Then turn amp on and check for hum.  If its gone, its not the amp's fault.  If the hum is still there you might have low level DC setting on your AC power line, although this will usually make the power transformer talk to you through the case rather than showing up in the speakers.

If you have interconnect cables connected to the amp only with the the other ends open this will cause lots of noise hum buzz hiss, don't do that!

Interconnect cables -  are they well shielded?  Goofy unshielded interconnects are hum city.

Do some of the components have a two conductor power cord and others or maybe the new amp, have a three wire power cord?  This can sometimes cause ground loop hum because there can be two ground paths between components.  Sometimes a 3 to 2 cheater plug on the 3 terminal power plug will fix this.

Finally, maybe the new amp just does not know the words.   :)

good luck and happy New Year,

It is very unlikely that your cables are  c/(f*4) = 1250 km long.
