Still on a search for a turntable to replace my VPI Scout. And I'm looking for something with a sort of classic wooden design. Looking at a couple choices and wondering if anyone here has experience with these or opinions on the good/bad.

The Acoustic Solid Wood or Classic Wood tables seem to be very highly regarded, with precision engineering. And I dont think I've seen a single negative statement about them. The AS Wood or Wood MPX tables weigh in at about 80 pounds and look like serious contenders.

On the other hand, Pro-Ject is a little more of a well-known name here in the US. The Xtension 12 table seems to be one of their better choices. It's a bigger table in dimensions, but a little more light-weight at around 45 or 50 pounds. I have been reading about the benefits of 12 inch tonearms in terms of tracking ability, and curious if you think the 12 inch tonearm of the Xtension 12 would surpass the higher mass-loaded Acoustic Solid tables?

Of course, I havent taken the VPI Classic off of my list yet, either. But there is a lot more information about the VPI online than the other 2.

Everything you are looking at appears to be good and solid performer, but I am a bit bias towards Acoustic Solid as I have an Acoustic Solid One to One.

See my avatar I would have to spend a lot more money to beat it and to be honest, I would not want to change the turntable as it is excellent.

I do like the look and design of the Acoustic Solid tables. They appear to be very well made.

They do however still use 9" tonearms (at least the Acoustic Solid Wood tables I am looking at). The Project Xtension 12 tables use 12" tonearms. I simply do not have enough experience with different turntables to know if the longer tonearm is more important for better sound quality, or if the higher mass of the Acoustic Solid table would out-perform the longer tonearm. The build quality of the Acoustic Solid would also seem to be a bit better (German precision engineering) than the Pro-ject, but this is based on opinion and speculation at this point.

Would love to hear more viewpoints from people regarding tonearm vs table mass. Also from anyone with experience using either of these 2 tables. Thanks again.

I am using Dynavector 507MKII arm, it’s a high mass arm. www.dynavector.com/products/tonearm/e_507mk2.html

There are arguments for and against 12” Vs 9” arms.
