I know pretty much squat about amplifiers and such, so help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm repurposing some old speakers (large floor standing 3-ways) of mine that should come out to about 86 db sensitivity.
My desired scenario is to use my iphone/ipod as a source. I've looked at the dayton dt100a at 50w/channel has the input for a 3.5mm jack. I was going to use a FIFO LOD to get direct line out of the iphone into the amp (not sure if it would work as expected bypassing the headphone controls).
Then I started wondering if the dayton would have enough output? Unibox says 30W=100+db which I'd rarely if ever get close to listening to.
Then I stumbled onto the $175 Class D amp thread.
Based on what I gathered, the class D amp wouldn't work for this application unless I added a pre-amp. Something I'd rather not do, but if I did would want something VERY basic, volume control, 3.5mm in, maybe one other input if I want to hook up a cd player, and that would be it...

I can use asoldering iron and read a schematic, so a pre-amp kit would be the way I'd like to go. I'd rather not have tubes, but all suggestions are welcome.

How much do you want to spend?
How big of a room do you have?
How loud do you listen to music?

You probably would need an integrated amplifier which combines a preamp and amp in one box.

I think you mean a FiiO LOD connector, FIFO is an program that extracts data, but otherwise, yes, it should work fine.  The Dayton amp has a 3.5mm input on the front to accept the output from the Ipod thru the LOD and a volume control, thus a preamp function.  There's also RCA jacks on the back if you want to add a source component later.  Here's a video showing how to hook the whole thing up: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?partnumber=300-383

How loud are you going to listen? If you are keeping it at normal volumes, the DTA-100a should do fine.

Dayton has another amp at around $120 which is an A/B design at 75 wpc. That would be another option.

Here's the thread...

Plan on testing this straight into a ClassDAudio amp for another AC'er, but would sound great with any amp with volume control.

I decided upon the dayton dt100 and the pure i-20 for an ipod dock. Once I get the speakers up and running I'll test it out.
