I'm with you.  I've been looking for a way to acquire an "affordable" DSD dac. Now, I'm wondering if I should back off.

I used to have a picture of that DSD graph in audio brochure.

This is what I was talking about when I used the BCD-1 to correct the PCM wave. The Sigmund Munson upsampling (whatever its called) corrects the pcm sample somewhat. The really bad recordings I ran through the BCD-1 twice, which seemed to clean it up. Too much over sampling the sound becomes sterile, depends on the recording. 8)

One also needs to listen to DSD, and form ones opinion too.  The simple 50k or 100k filters needed for DSD64 (and even simpler ones for DSD128; DSD256 needs none, nada..say that for PCM  :)) are so benign that the author never bothered to listen.  Hear piano in native DSD and then report back how noisy it is.   I find it sublime.  YMMV.

Sound advice Ted. Especially if the DAC maker accepts returns.

Did you see the Teac for $900 (Singapore dollars, USD $740)?

I saw your post on the Teac, and the limited info I was able to find online is intriquing. The Korg DSD DAC for $600 (estimated) could be a bargain depending on how it sounds and if they come up with an export version. I'm also considering the Sonore and Mytek but will need to save up some more pennies for one of those.

Interesting article

Interesting article. It reminds me of the block diagram comparison Sony included in their early SACD literature. They showed a block diagram of a PCM signal, along side a block diagram for a DSD signal. The DSD diagram was identical to the PCM, save for the spot where it appeared that two blocks from the PCM stream had been combined into a single function.

My takeaway was simply that Sony had identified a major source point for noise being created and added to the signal, and the DSD process simply removed that weak point. I wish I still had a copy of that diagram...
