i'm not sure what came over me.....

I'd often ask myself what will it take for there to start being used SS8's on the market. I thought i'll only happen if Jim makes something better and people upgrade. So I figured it'll be a while till that happens. Then out of no where Peter's SS8's from Alaska appeared in the available now section. Honestly one of my favorites pairs, WTF?!
FyI just this past May I treated myself to a pair of Ht2-tls for my 40th birthday. How could I possibly need or want to upgrade already. I love my ht2-tls and I'm not rich...but music is my life. I now spend most of my available time listening to music. Listening to stuff i some how missed out on when i was a teenager. I went from being into iron maiden, to the cure and depeche mode, then to(opening my self up to being flamed here)  grateful dead and (even more flaming) Phish. What i'm saying is I've been experiencing more music in the past 6 months of owning a pair of Salks than all the years combined. I now take time out of my day to listen and feel it. Miles, van halen, yes, pink floyd, bon iver, art pepper, stan getz, dire straits, steely dan.....tons of stuff i should have been exposed to but some how missed. Of course I get my jam band time in and when i do, and now that i learned to turn it up a little, i'm probably hearing it as good as i did live at the show. That to me is priceless.
SO
What this all comes down to is I bought peter's SS8's. It was like I was being guided by a divine intervention....i HAD to! . I'm so looking forward to getting them. I cant wait!!

ps. anyone want a 6 month old pair of ht2-tl's? :)

Congratulations on the upgrade!  I'm sure someone wants your HT2-TLs, particularly with the current RAAL tweeter.  Why don't you post a picture of them here?  You could offer up more details later or post a Trading Post ad, but there's not too much to be said about them that hasn't already been said, other than what finish and the price.

Conrgrats! They look great. Tell us how they sound when you get them. I am waiting for my SS8s to be built by the end of December. Enjoy.

What am I missing?

I purchased the Ht2-tls in May then soon after i wanted song surrounds for my rears. Locally, a year old pair of smokey grey song towers came up. I though for a little money more than new song surrounds plus shipping plus mounts, i could get these song towers and use them for my rears. totally over kill but I got them and love them.
so ht2-tls in front, ht2-center and song towers in the rear. but then the ss8 came up. i really cant rationalize keeping all 3 pairs of them except maybe for a day or so for a cool photo shoot.

guf..  I'm sure many folks would love a side by side comparison of the two speakers before you pack up the HT2TL's.  Or three if you include the ST's.

I'm packin' up the 8's this morning.  One is completely done, but I ran out of packing tape  :duh: and am heading out for more.

The ht2-tl is a SCST with larger SEAS drivers and a correspondingly larger / heavier enclosure?

Excellent stereo gear is one of the wisest investments you can make.

Yes.  But as the HT2-TL was the first Salk Excel MTM it would be more accurate to say that the Supercharged SongTower is an HT2-TL with smaller SEAS drivers and a correspondingly smaller / lighter enclosure!

Somehow, the SCST is able to get down to the same -3dB @ 34Hz as the HT2-TL, but obviously won't have the same air moving and room filling capability (but would be perfect for my smaller room and volume requirements).

I don't know how big a room it would take for the SCST to not fill it (I'm sure there's some size): they are amazingly good at just that.

Undistorted SPL might be differentiator.
