Is there an online list of all DAD's and HDAD's?

I want some higher rez recordings that will be output on my DVD player via the coax digital output.  I have asked whether or not a DVD-A player will output the DVD-A signal via the coax but others have said it won't.

Why was DVD-A invented if the DAD's are really just the same thing?  I mean they have the same bit rate (24bit) and can be done in 192kHz sampling rate so what's the deal? (96kHz sampling is pretty great too).

I mean everyone could be enjoying much higher rez recordings with DAD's and HDAD's and there would be no need to worry about whether or not your DVD player could handle it...I guess I am starting to get frustrated with the big companies and their stupid format wars.  :x

Copy protection and 5.1 surround sound via lossless packing of data. These are what makes DVD-A DVD-A and not just higher sample rate PCM.

Now ask why DSD was invented. Short answer... "ka-ching". hehe

That makes sense.

My only gripe with DVD-A is that I don't really want all the older recordings mixed to 5.1 but I guess that isn't my decision...the masses want surround effects and so forth.

If it I had it my way:

Update all great older recordings by getting the master tapes and then making 24/96 or 24/192 HDAD's out of them.  Keep it stereo.  Keep it safe... Or Keep it simple.

If recording engineers and today's artists want to make orignal 5.1 mixes then they should use DVD-A.

HDAD's for stereo.  DVD-A for 5.1 mixes.

I sometimes like the old stuff remixed, sometimes not.  The Pink Floyd DSotM was a resounding success, IMO.  A couple of older DVD-As, such as Deep Purple's "Machine Head", don't fare so well.  When the artist is involved, as is the case with Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots", the results can be spectular.  The last couple Steely Dan discs, as well as Donald Fagan's "The Nightfly" are also very well mixed for surround.

Some discs contain a high rez stereo track in addition to the MC.  What I'd really like to see in a way would be for the studios to drop the DD track off the discs.  Yeah yeah, I know- that's a part of the format and allows playback on any old DVD player.  But if/when the format really gets going people will buy them for the high rez tracks.  The DD is already wasted space to me.

I agree with you, Heavystarch.  I'd like to see a high rez stereo version included on every DVD-A (providing it was ever mixed for stereo to begin with).
