A nerd's audio journey
« on: 11 Oct 2012, 07:25 pm »
I got bit by the hifi bug young. I saved my hard earned summer money to buy a pair of infinity overture ones and a Harman kardon receiver. All of which I still own and enjoy. However, I am noticing noise in the built in amplifier when there is no music coming. It's not that shocking considering I have had them since the mid nineties.
All that being said, I am essentially looking for replacements for them. I love the mid range and mid bass on them. I am looking at N3s paired with the 12" servo.
The most frustrating part of my journey is that all the local home theater shops have gone out of business. I am stuck with magnolia inside of a best buy.
Can anybody speak to the midrange of the n3s and the mid bass of the 12" servo?

Also I am writing this from my phone so I apologize for any errors.

The midrange is great.  After building several pairs I am very happy with how voices sound and the overall tone of the speaker itself. The highs are great with the BG tweeter and adding a sub would easily complement the pair.  I am speaking for the N3 S's not the TL version.  If you are interested, I have a pair of N3's (book shelve version) extra laying around you could have.  They are hammered metal black.

Overall, you can not go wrong with these, and nothing in the price range up to 2k will sound as good.

I have listened to the N2's and own the X-Omnis and X-Statiks.  For the money, I would absolutely recommend the X-Statiks used or in the kit form.  I still feel that the BG Planar is a much better tweeter.  But having the three way crossover, open-baffle, and four woofers is in my mind a much better deal.  The N3s though would definitely be more than enough speaker for a medium sized room.

As for the servo, Rythmik is considered by some to be the best recommendation in the $600 range.  The GR driver boast an even better high frequency extension, making it extremely easy to use with any set of speakers.  You cannot go wrong with the setup.

I forgot you still had those for an extremely good price.

In this case, I would recommend the N3S.  No need to build the boxes, only the crossover.  About the same cost as the X-Statik kit, but that would be a little more difficult for a DIY effort.

Jipillow,

Where are you located?

There might be someone close by who has a pair of N3's/N3S you could audition.

The N3 and N2X/N1 share many of the same characteristics. Danny offers a free in home audition of the N2X and N1. It's actually a cross country tour. You just need to give him a call and ask to be put on the list. It only costs you the price of shipping the speakers to the next person in line once you've had your fun with them. :thumb:

Good Luck!

Hello Jipillow: I have had the N3 TL for almost 2 years now! I really love these speakers and consider the mid range to be one of the best points in this design, although it is a very well balanced speaker in all regards. The bass is also great in my opinion and is very tight and accurate, it may not extend down as much as other designs. However they extend low enough for most music, I can feel them hit me in the chest and dynamic enough to put a smile on my face!

Hey Jipillow
I just recently  built a pair of  N# TL's.  I've been listening to them for about 3  weeksn now I guess.  mine are front vented due to the fact I couldn't get them  that far away from the rear wall.
The speakers definitely  have  great mid  range and  to me, crystal clear   top.   Voices are amazing.  Without a sub,  I'd say  they could  use a bit more at the bottom but that could  just be due to the front venting..  I;m running a sub  so  it's no big deal..  I don't know if this will make sense,  but the more I lesten to them,  the more I realize  that  a lot of the music reproduced by my old spekares was not defined,  everything kind of   blened together.. I think this gave the illusion  of more bass.   As I listen to the N3's ,  all the instruments are so clear,  at first this was giving me the impression of lacking bass.  As I put more hours on them, I'm  realizing the bass is there, it's just different.  Tight and controlled.  Sorry if I'm not explaining this well.  I'm pretty new to this level of  speaker
At any rate, I absolutely love these,  they bring a smile to my face every time  I listen to them  :thumb:

Thank you all for posting your feedback on the speakers. I have actually decided to pull the trigger and get a pair from jparkhur.
The only downside is that I am going to have to mount them to the wall for waf. Anybody got some experience as to the best way of wall mounting?

Yeah.  Use duct tape.

If you nail her to the wall somebody will call the police.

The only downside is that I am going to have to mount them to the wall for waf.

If the spouse likes music even a bit put on a singer.  A good singer on a well recorded disc  is pretty incredible on these speakers. That will help waf.

You definetely need a sub on the sealed version.   Enjoy

The question is not if a sub, but how many. I am going to have at least one 12" servo

I have had my pair N3s's for a week and I love absolutely love them. I have them hooked up to my computer until i get enough money scrapped together to get a subwoofer (gr servo of course).

If there is one word i would use to describe them is "smooth." The twitter is fantastic. The midrange frankly blows my old speakers out of the water and I loved the midrange on my old speakers.

They can really put out the volume when i crank it. However, for me it is more important how a speaker sounds when the volume is low. I don't have to strain my ears to understand anything. It's clear and concise. I have mostly been listening to music. Adele and the Black Keys for the most part. Adele because of her fantastic female range and the Black Keys because I have seen them in person.

The only comparable speakers that i have been able to listen to are Paradigm studio 2 and the B & W CM5. They are at least as good as they are and probably superior. I say probably because i have not been able to A/B compare them. Considering how much i paid for these compared to their price tag, the bang for the buck is not even close.

It was an absolute pleasure to purchase them from jparkhur. He went above and beyond in both communication and level of craftsmanship. I look forward to buying the sub box from him.

Glad to hear, Danny's DIY/AV123 designs are definitely high on value.

A single servo sub (not open baffle mind you) should be plenty for a small to medium room.  I generally recommend placing it near a front corner, about 1'9" out from both walls.  This will give you lower end reinforcement but will generally not sound boomy.  Adjust as necessary.
