Would this older TT sound as good as the newer models?

I have been interested in possibly getting back into analog. I have a friend/dealer who clearly stated his best dcs
digital front end is bested by his Well Tempered Labs TT. He played some Frank Sinatra on vinyl and I must say it sounded very musical indeed.

If I get back into vinyl, I would need to get another TT. I had an entry level Thorens back in the '80's (I think TD 320) but gave it to my cousin some 15 years ago.

So my question is this. I like the older Garrard TT... the 301. Looking at some refurb 301s and I'll admit I like them! But the question would come up, do the Rega, VPI, Well Tempered Labs, SME, Spiral Groove actually improve on the sound one got from the older ones, like the Garrard 301? Seems to me that the older mechanical models with the great designs would be hard to beat. Am I missing something?

I would say all a matter of taste on the differences in design and drives.
The rim drives are supposed to be really musical. So, only you can decide.
All are very good. To many variables involved too. Phono Pre, cartridges, Arms, remainder of system etc. It can get expensive.
I know not the specific answer you were looking for. Some of those rebuilt Garrad's can be pretty pricy and works of art too. If you can afford it go for it.

So the short answer is NO.
