Ambient lighting - listening rooms

With my renovation in the planning stages, I have also started looking at LED lighting as you can customize the colour/brightness to make your room a little more comfortable. It is really great how many options are out there now for lighting selections.

Avoid recessed can fixtures if the space above is occupied (noise transmission).  Even cans rated as air tight and safe to be direct contact with insulation (with 12 inches of fiberglass on top) still transmit sound like crazy.  Better to use some sort of wall sconces.

LED lighting is still bleeding edge technology.  Stick with big brand names as more reliable/longer lasting.  (After 70+ years fluorescent bulbs are still not "commodity" items.)  The lack of heat gain from LED is great in warmer climates, but up here in the great white north, actually cost more for heating/cooling, especially if your listening space is in the basement.

What?  I have 12 6 inch, line voltage recessed fixtures in the room I'm typing this in, and they are dead silent.  They are AT and IC.  Now, I have low voltage recessed lights in my kitchen that do make a buzzing noise, which sometimes you hear and sometimes you don't.

I don't think JLM is talking about the fixtures themselves making noise, just that if you are trying to soundproof a room the recessed lighting fixtures can be sound leakage/transmission points.
