Rogue Tube Rolling
« on: 15 Oct 2012, 05:00 am »
Hi folks,

I see a good deal of discussion of output tubes that can be rolled for Rogue amps (like the KT120s for those amps that can handle them). But I wanted to get Rogue owners' opinions on which tubes will give the biggest sonic changes/improvements? In what order would you upgrade tubes in Rogue amps?

For the Stereo 90, my choices would be the output tubes, 6SN7s and 12AX7s.

And of course any specific tube recs are most welcome.

I haven't done a lot of rolling in my Stereo 90.  2 kids now so very little (almost no) time for serious listening.  I've got Tele 12AX7s, JAN- Philips 6SN7s and EH KT90s in mine right now (really want some KT120s!!!).  I haven't sat down and changed one type at a time yet, so I don't know which type makes the most difference.  I did hear a fairly substantial difference in sound when I changed from GL KT88s to the KT90s.  With my other amps, I have also heard the most change with the power tubes.  I've heard other people with the opposite impression though; they heard large differences with changing miniatures and/or drivers.  I'd also be very interested to hear about others' experiences.  Are you still running the EH KT88s?  How are you trying to change your sound?  Glad to hear you're still enjoying your amp!

Hi.
Hi folks,

Yes, tube rolling indeed changes sound bigtime.

One time we rolled 300Bs on a pair of hi-end brandname 300Bs PP monoblocks ("Handcrafted in California" printed on the amp front panel). The stock tubes were Chinese made, which already sound pretty good.

BUT, but we rolled them with WE300B. We could believe not our ears - the sound was so much improved like "an old bag dragging her feet magically transformed into a Cindellera spinning ballet in her dancing shoes." So silky & sooo elegant!

Nite & day sonic improvement.

Just getting started thinking about potential tube upgrades. I have had 6SN7 Treasures in my OTL Atma-Sphere S-30 back in the day, but most discussion seems to be about output tubes.

I know that I won't want to roll to tubes that might roll off the bass. Not a compromise I am willing to make, but trying to get an idea of the flavors out there, and for which tubes money is best spent.
