New Dead Can Dance release

I know we've got a few fans of Dead Can Dance on this site and I thought I'd give you a heads up about their new release "Anastasis." I received both the cd and vinyl versions this week and have listened to them a few times. My opinion generally mirrors the review on Allmusic.com, a solid enjoyable release that old fans will enjoy but isn't going to make new converts. For those of you with vinyl rigs, the lp's are a sonic treat. The slightly less than one hour program is evenly split over four double 180 gram clear vinyl sides. My lp's are flawless, silent and flat as one could hope for. The bass on the vinyl release is absolutely stygian and thunderous. I don't think I've heard any non hip-hop release that plumbs the lower depths like this mix. The cd release's mix is more balanced and isn't noticeably bass heavy. Both mixes are very well recorded and continues their tradition of excellent audio engineering. Lisa's contributions are greatly influenced by Arabic music, with some of her songs reminding me of an older, more burnished and mellow Natacha Atlas ( a great world music artist IMO.) Brendan's contributions sound like the Brendan we know and expect.

I received my new LP on Wednesday. I've been thinking of throwing it in the garbage, but haven't done it yet. It is, IMO, one of the worst LPs I've ever heard. You'd think after a long drought, they could have come up with something to give me reason to listen to it.

Comparing the new LP to earlier works like Spiritchaser, it doesn't hold a candle. It's one boring selection after another, all with the same tempo. Pretty much one big long music sequencing track with some silly lyrics, Ooos and Aahs.

To sum it all up: Horrible.

That's good to know too!  Spiritchaser is probably my favorite.

I agree that the tempos are all slow and the album would have benefited from some variation. If interested, Deadcandance.com will let you download a free mp3 of one the songs on the lp. If you like it, you'll like the rest probably. If not, you're gonna fall into Wayner's hater camp.
FWIW, I think Spiritchaser is their least typical album, excepting their first one that showcased their early goth rock beginnings.

Maybe I was simply expecting too much from them. I'll put it away for awhile and listen to it again in a couple of weeks.

Not that much different from Brendan Perry's "Ark" release in 2010....

Spotify is a sampler, but thought it was boring and on the weak side.
I'm a big fan too!

After giving the album a listen via DCD's website, I went ahead and ordered the vinyl.  While I won't say the material on the album is my favorite stuff by the band, I'll certainly say it's not horrible either.  The vinyl is absolutely fantastic as the original poster mentions.  Dead (no pun intended) quiet and flat as a pancake.  The bass is absolutely ridiculous as well.........

Of the two albums I have, I prefer Within the Realm of a Dying Sun for content, but the new release certainly beats it for vinyl quality.  Looking forward to expanding my collection of their albums.  Next up is one of the two Mo Fi releases......just not sure which one yet.
