Doing things backwards - need driver advice

This summer I bought an 8' x 26" bamboo countertop, cut it into 2 pieces 4' x 26" and have been waiting for it to cool off enough to use my  unairconditioned workshop (here is Louisiana it is just too hot to use from about June though September).  It is made of bamboo strips, not plywood and is very dense and heavy.  This is a pretty piece, already veneered in bamboo on all sides except the bottom, so I don't want to cut it any narrower - just put it on a base a put a finish coat or oil on it.  I guess this could be called one of my "pretty" projects, where looks will matter.  Based on the 2.2 guide of driver size to baffle width, I am thinking of putting a 12" driver in it.  I am not opposed to eventually adding a larger bass driver and a tweeter, but I really want to go with a single full-range driver initially.  Also, a vintage piece might be nice, but not a requirement.  If I set a budget of $500 for a pair, any suggestions of a nice 12" full range driver I might try? Will have a huge 8 watts to drive it.

Whatever you decide to do, make protoypes first before chopping up the nice stuff.  You might want to hit the Full-Range section of DIYAudio for advice too if you are certain that is the route you would like to take.  Not my thing, so I've got nothing to offer there.

The Auio Nirvana Super 12 Cast might work for you.

I think you may still need to add a bass section.
