Muddy bass with 403B "upgrade" on Miniwatt S1??
« on: 2 Oct 2012, 09:08 pm »
I recently "upgraded" the Chinese 6J1 tubes to Western Electric 403B tubes in my Miniwatt S1 and found the bass getting boosted and smudged.  Has anyone else done this upgrade and noticed this?  FWIW, I upgraded the Chinese 6P1's to the flying C Svetlana tubes a few months ago and thought that was a subtle upgrade in clarity.

Just a 2 cents:
WE is a great name in tubes, this 403B had to be tested in a tube tester to say some clues.
If it is NIB, never used it may need run some hours to burn in and reach best sound.
If this tube had spend many years stored the cathode may take some hours of burn any impurities, and the getter clear some gas accumulated over the years.
I would emailing the amp manufacturer to help, as he know the amp circuit very well.
Good luck
