New Cheap Thrills
« on: 30 Sep 2012, 03:37 am »
So a friend at work is dumping a turntable and knowing I'm the "Audio guy" in the office, asks if I want it with some LP's as well.  Sure.  It's pretty rough, broken cartridge, filthy, cracked dust cover, he says it worked.  A Pioneer PL 200, direct drive with a suspended chassis, it's worth a look at home.

It cleans up pretty quickly.  The platter mat is toast, falls apart in my hands trying to clean what appears to be WD-40 or something off of the platter.  I have a lot of homemade platters, no problem there.  Platter turns, speed adjusts, arm cues and returns, Auto Return, woo hooo!  I'll find a cartridge in the drawer for it tomorrow and see how it sounds.  So wadda ya think about me now?

Oh, the albums?  Journey, Boston, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Men at Work, The Knack, and the 1812 Oveture (?).  Not bad for free and a little soap.

That is awesome.  I'm looking for something similar for a friend of my son.  He went to a car show and record shop with us this summer and bought Ted Nugent albums :thumb:
He and his dad are Nugent fans.  He thinks vinyl is pretty cool.  I gotta keep him hooked while I can  8)
My goal is to build a cheap n cheerful craigs list system.

That's one of my "Spot Mats".  http://www.theanalogdept.com/tad_spotmat.htm  I have them made out of quite a few different materials, this one is bituminous impregnated cork from Advance Auto.  You can also purchase someting using the same theory, the Ringmat http://www.musicdirect.com/p-4951-ringmat-turntable-mat-anniversary-gold-spot-edition.aspx for $99.  I prefer the nearly free options.

I'm with Paul.  What about the dust cover? Very impressive cleanup.

Ha!!  Did Paul change his post from "What's on the platter" to the dustcover question, or am I going crazy.  Easy as pie on this one, after dish soap and water, Meguiar's PlastX.  This is a junk cover, broken, so I didn't invest anymore work into it, just wipe on and lightly buff off with microfiber cloth.  But for nice quality, thick plastic covers that need a lot of restoration, use the 3M 39008 Headlight Lens Restoration System.  You need a decent cordless drill with this, not a 700 rpm weakling, 1600 rpm is the minimum.
