Cheap laser tachometer ($13.50 shipped)
« on: 30 Jun 2012, 03:36 pm »
A guy I bought a VPI PLC off of this week pointed out a great deal on a laser tachometer that he is loving, and I thought I'd pass it along. I will let y'all know how I like it when it arrives, but this seller was raving about it, and it seems much easier to use than a strobe disc from KAB or VPI. Link to eBay listing:

I hope to try mine tomorrow if I get a chance. You need to put reflective tape on the rotating surface somewhere, like an old LP, maybe 2 or 3 evenly spaced for slow revs and calculate it.

Seems great so far, but I wanted to get a quality strobe disc in here before making conclusions.

I am using one. Works well. Just use blutak or museum putty to attach the reflective sticker to the side of your turntable. You can then remove it easily afterwards.

Blu tak is a great idea!

I have one of these digital tachs and a strobe disk.
The digital tachs measures the speed off of the reflective strip, ie, once per revolution.
The strobe disk allows you to see the cogging and relative change in pitch as your platter rotates.
I don't think the tach replaces a strobe disk for me.

We use a Digital Tach to set up our Kuzma TTs. Very affective and dead on. Measure the speed with an LP playing. Attach reflective tape on side of platter and away ya go.
When correct speed is attained the toes are a tappin. Well worth the money.

The tach revealed that when my 33 1/3 is at proper speed my 45 RPM is off by a few tenths of an RPM. But I can dial in the correct speed by using the dial on my PLC. Maybe one day an SDS will be in my future. One day...Or maybe not.
