How about a Decware ZBOX? Single input, volume control and it can use any of the 12AX series of tubes.

+1 on anything w/the name melos on it!

also, i have heard good things about the little dared sl200a remote control pre, but i have no first hand experience.  those who have say tube upgrade is mandatory; cap upgrades are also nice.  they retail for ~$500, but occasionally show up used for less...
