Pre Pro with 9B- Go Balanced or not?
« on: 9 Aug 2012, 01:42 pm »
I have a bryson 9B multi channel amp which i believe is "true balanced."  I am in the market for a new pre pro to replace my AVR.  Is there any REAL benefit to going balanced with the pre pro?  The set up does NOT involve long runs of cable and frankly use of RCA's will probably be make both the amp and pre and easier install depthwise inside my cabinet.

RE pre pro choices: The onyko 5508 has balanced and Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 while the NAD T187 uses AUDYSSEY MULTEQ XT.  All in all historically id prefer the NAD due to looks simplicity and historic like of NAD sound.  However, the onkyo offers balanced and the more advanced adyssey.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi

Be aware that there are different ways to provide a balanced line - so it is not always a matter of RCA (single ended) vs Balanced (XLR). The balanced circuits can be a cheap IC chip to a Transformer or Discrete Class A operational amplifiers (Bryston).

So audio quality can be affected by the type of balanced circuit that is applied.

I am using an Onkyo 5508 in the balanced mode connected to my 9BSST/2. Not sure if it's cheap IC chip but it works for my home theater. Sound is OK not as good as my reference system. I suspect if I was using the SP3 it might be a different story.
