Can't disagree with you on the commercial theater comment but it all depends on your room. I think the side dipoles in many cases will do fine and even my own room has poles for the center beam that directs would not be good in.

For movies only, then both rear and sides dipoles would work fine and is the way that movies are mixed in post production.  There will always be a THX  and Dolby fight but your ears will tell the difference.

I suggest 7.1 because I think it expands where 5.1 leaves off and fills the room better.

For Multichannel music then all radiators might be the way to go and it works very well with movies also.

I have been talking intensly with Tony Grimali's group about this and the way designing a room should be etc. He is the person that teaches and wrote the certification for Home THX standards etc.

I would advise to listen to the two setups and make your own opinon....even if it is not popular to the masses........you are the one that will live with the system.
