Nakamichi CA-5 II preamp/phono stage
« on: 18 Sep 2012, 07:49 pm »
I sent my Gill Audio Design Alana pre/phono back to David for an upgrade/enhancement and pulled my Nakamichi CA-5 II from the basement to use in the interim. I had not used the Nak in 10 years and had forgotten how good the phonstage is. I am using a Lyra Skala and set the adjustable db gain on 24 and it sounds marvelous. I initially tried 30 db and it was a little too loud and bright. I still prefer the Alana, but the Nak is a nice back up. Back in the day, Nakamichi made some nice products. I also have an MB-2 CD player and a 700ZXL cassette recorder in the basement.

I will be sending my Van Alstine preamp in for upgrades. Still haven't quite figured what I'll use in the meantime. Think I have a vintage Kenwood somewhere...

Hey Laura, if you ever want to get rid of that 700 from the basement, let me know...

I am not completely surprised by how good that Nak's vintage phono stage is.

There very many preamps from that era that had really good phono stages, even by modern standards.

The Yamaha C  series, Luxman C-02 (which I currently own), Kenwood C-1, Sumo, all had very good phono stages.

The knob second from the right is cartridge loading.
