NAS Recommendations
« on: 9 Jun 2012, 07:36 pm »
I'm currently running a dedicated HP HTPC (2TB storage) and JRiver primarily as my audio player, and am now looking for a 2-4 TB NAS.

I'm looking for a unit that is easy to use, reliable, quiet.  Anyone have any recommendations?

I am looking for a 2TB+ external storage for audio as well ... it does not have to be NAS ... hope OP doesn't mind me adding this - instead of starting a new thread ...

Thanks
Sunil

Have you looked at Vortexbox?

I've used 2 4-drive boxes
a Netgear ReadyNAS and a Promise Smart Stor NS4300n

Both were relatively quiet, but not "audiophile" quiet.
I did modify the promise with a quiet fan as well as adding a low speed fan to the front to aid air flow.

the Netgear is quieter as a stock device, and has a variable speed fan. It can be loud when at full speed, but improves when idle.

the biggest issue i've had was a weird RAID failure with the Promise device where it would stutter with transfers, thus interrupting my music with pauses and ticks. Ultimately the device was rebuilding the RAID array, but non of the software monitoring tools were indicating a problem. IT has been working fine now for the last 16 months since the problem without any hiccups.

the netgear [purchased when the other box was on the fritz] has been problem free.

Todd,
Thanks for your suggestions.
I've been doing some research, do you know anything about the Synology DiskStation DS212j?
Can be expanded to 4 x 2 TB  and seems to get good reviews.

No personal experience, but it does seem to get good reviews.

if memory serves, computeraudiophile.com did a review of that NAS (or at least a similar model)

from my netgear setup, 4x2TB in RAID 5 gives 5.6TB of storage, Nice.  :thumb:
