Minimum power requirement
« on: 23 Jun 2012, 05:57 pm »
hi guys, got a question regarding power requirements in particular to Soundscape m7 and the Ht3.
They are both about as sensitive yet salks recommends 200 solid watts for the the SS M7 versus 100 watts for the Ht3.
Well in theory, 100 watts, they should both sound just as loud but any reason why the SS would require twice as much?

Thank you

i've got ht2-tl's and am running a bryston 4bsst2(rated at 300 watts/channel).if i were you i would not cheap out on the power, as you will be better off with more power.also more power will more than likley drive them better ,i'm not sure what the impedance on the soundscapes are or the efficancy. my ht2-tl's seem to really come alive with the 4b,your mmv.

Ht3s. 84 db sensitivity

I had them on a 105 w/ch Audio Research and it did not drive them sufficiently

200 plus

The ss 7 are also 84 db

Te soundscape 8 is 87 db

Thanks for pointing that out.  I will have to change the recommended power for the HT3's.  100 watts is not really enough.  It should say 200 watts.

After auditioning the Ncore at 400watts into 4 ohms, I'd say get as much as you can afford.

An old mechanic once told me, "There's no substitute for displacement." An old hippie sound man once told me, "There's no such thing as too much power."  My vehicles and audio system, when I can afford it, reflect those sage words.

Well, power is a good thing (up to a point).  However, high power in and of itself is only part of the story.  For example, a 50 watt per channel Class A is often thought by many audio enthusiasts to sound better (subjectively) than a similar amp that puts out 150 watt per channel Class AB  Having personally converted just such an amp from Class AB to Class A, I can personally attest that Class A does indeed provide better performance (more detail, smoother overall sound).

From the First Watt website:
“Dick Olsher famously remarked that “The first watt is the most important watt.” This sentiment has also been expressed by others as “Who cares what an amplifier sounds like at 500 watts if it sounds like crap at one watt?”

I wanna go with tube route, and at 100 tubes these watts aint comming cheap, on top of that, it seems that they mostly come in mono blocks which means two of them and a seperate preamp.
Any advise in going with tube route for amp/integrated?
