Stupid question
« on: 21 Jun 2012, 02:53 pm »
Apologies in advance but....I recently blew the fuses in my Insight 440H. My eyesight is not so good for reading the values on these fuses (the ones in the external holders). So....what do I replace them with ?? 2A, 5A.    What is the best local source for replacements?  Home Depot? Radio Shack?

Thanks for the help.

Mark

PS- no problem with the amp, just a volume control too high for the application.

My Ultra+ 550 has 5amp  250v. Home Depot is just fine :thumb:

We suggest that you use the lowest value speaker fuse that does not blow often in normal use.  A good rule of thumb would be no more that a 2 amp quick blow fuse for a small two way speaker, 3 amp quick blow for 3 way bookshelf or moderately efficient floor standing speakers, 4 amp for big robust floor standing speakers, and 5 amp quick blow for inefficient big three way or more floor standing speakers.  Never use slow blow fuses for the speakers.  If you do, then your speakers will protect the fuses and you won't have to replace fuses, just the speakers when they melt.

However, this might be advised if you are buying very expensive exotic wonderful sounding fuses.  If the fuses are more expensive then the speakers, then by all means use largest fuse values available.  :)

With your speakers, Mark (I think they are Salk HT3s, correct?)  I would suggest 4 amp quick blow or 5 amp quick blow max if you are really playing the system REALLY LOUD and blow the 4 amps ones often.

Hay Frank, No Martyo has the HT3s I have HT2-TLs and since I got the HT2s I have not poped a fuse :thumb:. I use to pop the 3 amp fuse in my old Dahlquist DQ10s all the time and even the 5 amp fuse in my old 550 EXR6. Those DQ10s just suck the life out of most amps, I have killed a few amps over the years with the 10s. People would look a little funny at me when I would say how high I would turn my set? Shit man the DQ10s are just a little inefficient they didn't start to sound good until 12:30-1:00  :o. Now a days, I just looked last week with a SPM, at around 10:00 to 10:30 it was around 85 87db just wonderful :D.
Exotic Fuses! Many years ago when I lived down it the city (Chicago) I found that 1954 penny behind the 15 amp fuse would sound the best. I tryed one of those steel ones from the 40s but it just did not sound the same as the copper . Oh ya, what about that time we poped the 5 ampers in my Dyna 416 at 2AM? The party kinda came too a stop :o I can't put a penny in there  Not to worry a little aluminum foil around the fuse and the party is back on . Not recemmended!

Thanks for the responses. Frank, it's Mark down in Rochester, and I have Maggie 3.6R's. The speaker's fuses are all fine (I think they are 5A on both the woof and ribbon). I'm not sure if I'd replaced the Insight fuses once before (don't think so?) , but lucky they blew before any speaker damage occurred. Stupid mistake; had the volume way to high when the signal I wanted to monitor came through...loud burst then dead silence.  I will likely replace with 2A or 3A fast-blo to be safe, as what caused the blow-out is not my usuall operating modus.  Great amp and an obviously bullet-proof design.

Mark
