Selah or VMPS, standmount/subs or floorstanders?
« on: 5 Jun 2004, 01:07 pm »
I'm getting ready to buy my next set of speakers.  I'm planning on buying either a pair of  RC3R (with Seas woofers) with dual subs or the Chalcedony floorstanders from Selah Audio.  Both options cost the same and have the same drivers.  Besides taking up extra floorspace, are there any disadvantages of having stand mounts and subs compared to floorstanders?  Does anyone have an opinion on these speakers?

Also VMPS is in the mix, but I'm pretty much decided on Selah.  If I went with VMPS, I would either get RM30 or 626R with subs.

My room is about 15' x 14'.  The front half of the left wall opens up to the upper split level.  I have Odyssey monos, Tempest, and a Cary 303/200 CDP.

I would also buy matching center and surrounds.

Any opinions?

Thanks

In some rooms (even most rooms) the best place for low bass is not the best place to put the midrange and high frequency drivers.

Said another way, you have much more flexibility with room placement to get the best sound with sub/monitor than floorstanders.

The downside is you have to buy stands, an IC for the sub (s) amps.  A crossover if not included in the subs amps etc...

The subs in the Chalcedony floorstander are completely separate from the rest of the speaker.  They're active and have their own amp.  Basically it's like having two subwoofrs in the same cabinet as the rest of the speaker.

Is it important to have the same length ICs going from pre to amps and pre to subs?  I have 1m ICs from pre to amps now, and if I get subs, I'll have 3 or 4 meter ICs for them.

Thanks
