Omega and Subs... again
« on: 18 Feb 2012, 08:14 am »
I know this subject has come up before, but some of the posts are several years old, and they seem to be scattered about.

What are folks experiences with Omegas and subs?  Some questions:

1)  With the use of 1 sub (vs stereo subs), does the image seem shifted? Does the sub stand out in any way?
2)  What are some experiences with the Omega subs in particular, and have other brands integrated well with the Omegas?
3) Optimal crossover settings, placement?

Thanks in advance!

Hello anchan,

Omega/Hoyt-Bedford speakers and Omega/Hoyt-Bedford subs are made to go with each other from the ground up and once set up properly are not even noticed in the system unless one turns the sub off while the music is playing, then some of the bottom end goes missing.
Although Omega/HB subs will work well for home theatre, they really shine with music, due (among other things) to their speed - enabling them to keep up with the fastest of speakers.

Will one Omega/HB sub disappear in a system?  Absolutely, if set up somewhere between the two main speakers.  Will two subs improve the image over one sub?  Absolutely, if those subs are set up right at the main speakers or under them, set up the same for right and left sides.

Due to their ability to disappear in the system, Omega/HB subs will mate well with a huge variety of speakers.

As far as integrating other brands of subs with Omega speakers, that sub will need to be:
1) Fast, so it will likely need to be a sealed cabinet.
2) Use no more than an 8" or 10" lightweight driver.
3) Have a very solid, non resinating cabinet.
4) Have a plate amp that is designed (or modified) to run with it's cabinet/driver combination.

Omega and Hoyt-Bedford subs are proprietary from the ground up and do not use off the shelf parts.

If you have Omega speakers, it only makes sense to to put an Omega or HB sub with them.

Concensus is that adding sub(s) help with imaging.  Some say due to laying a "firmer foundation" but I suspect it's due to taking load off the main speaker that allows it to perform better (under less strain).

Again conventional wisdom says sealed for music, ported for HT.  Sealed is faster but won't go as low.  Ported subs can have a hump in the frequency response or call attention to sound chuffing through the ports themselves (OTOH a good design should eliminate these issues).

Solid cabinets and matched amps should be a given for any decent subwoofer.

Can't quite afford 2, and can't put one in the center either due to furniture issues, so I am forced to place it just outside one of the mains.  Considering whether its better for me to buy 2 subs from another manufacturer, maybe used for about 1K.  Or I can just go with 1 Omega for the same price.  Just wondered if anyone had the same concerns, and in the end which choice they made.

I suggest you go with quality before quantity and try a single Omega or Hoyt sub.  The bass from a down firing sub will be more diffused than a front firing sub and draw less attention to itself.  Just outside one of the mains?  It will probably work.  I suggest you give Louis a call.  I do not know a more approachable or knowledgable person when it comes to all things speaker.

I'm new to the forum and have just purchased a pre-loved pair of XRS 6's and deep hemp sub.
My amp is a Perreaux Audiant 80i. My question is has any one experimented with "Dspeaker"
subwoofer room correction  with Omega subs ?

anchan,

I'm in the same boat (may not need/afford/fit a 2nd sub) as I'm eyeing a potential replacement for older speakers in my 2nd audio system.  In this setting the sub is also a speaker stand.

So speaking for Louis () it should be no problem for him to whip up a matching sub cabinet that is ready for driver/amp and save a few $$.

Late to the game for this thread...

I've run three different brands of sub with two models of Omega...

Vandersteen 2W, ACI (don't remember the model), and now Omega Deep Hemp. Matched over the years with Compact Hemps and now Super 6 Alnico Monitors.

I also play in several bands and use a single 1000 watt QSC sub with two 12" speakers for pro audio (keyboard, electric bass and kick drum).

For starters, know that low frequencies are a tricky thing. This is a case where two subs are not necessarily better than one. And center vs not centered in not an automatic decision.

The right answers for where to place a sub are beyond the scope of any short answer. And many are qualified to provide better answers than I. What I can recommend...

Quality matters more than power or quantity of subs (I love my Deep Hemp).

Frequency can make a difference, but in the case of Omega Louis goes at 100Hz with a fairly steep slope.

Louis also chooses to not place a hight pass filer on the main speakers. Right, wrong??? Don't know, but sure love the way my system sounds so it can't be all bad.
