XRCDs ripped to HDD for BDP1
« on: 30 May 2012, 07:07 pm »
Last night I came across an album (Hiroko Kikubu.. "New York Uncovered") which I ripped from an XRCD24 and was playing thru my BDP1. Wow! This sounded as good as or better than any Hi Rez download I have. It definitely sounded better than normal CDs ripped to a hard drive, even those which are well recorded and engineered CDs. I then searched for other XRCD rips I had and they too sounded great.

Anyone else have this experience? Seems as though XRCD rips and the BDP1 work very well together.

XRCD does not differ in word depth or sampling frequency from standard redbook CD format, it is just a specific set of mastering and manufacturing steps.

I have always enjoyed the Stockfish XRCD24's. "Closer to the Music" collection, Sara K, (and others) spring to mind. The cd covers say they are 24bit recordings. When I ripped the XRCDs to hard drive I changed the default rip setting from 16bit to 24bit in the hopes that I would not "damage" the ripped version. Haven't done any A-B-A comparisons but decent original recordings are always appreciated.

The recording may have been recorded at 24bit resolution but was mastered to the CD in 16 bit format.  Ripping at 24bit won't gain you anything, but I don't think the added 8 bits of 0 padding would hurt anything either, but it does increase your filesize by 50%.

Hi srb

What you say makes sense. And I did notice an increase in file size. Wasn't too concerned as there's plenty of hard drive space.
