Fostex FF85WK in uFonken
« on: 9 Sep 2012, 01:13 am »
My just completed uFonken Fostex FF85WK build.  These drivers punch way beyond their weight, sound great from start with no time on the drivers.  Not happy with my veneering job but they will live on my desk ultimately so not too concerned about it.  Thanks Dave and Chris for singing the praises of these drivers, definitely warranted!

Best,
Ed

Looks like they'd fit right in outdoors (are the Fostex weatherproof?).

Their looks also go right along with the rugged "northern woods" motif.

If they sound good, well that's all that matters.

Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys,

Jon, I am not quite sold on the single driver in my main system just yet.  This unit is for my desktop system.  The first night I hooked it up I had the amp high passed at around 140Hz with the bottom being handled (quite nicely) by the bass section of the V1s.  On certain songs there was a real connection to the music.  I have been playing them fullrange off and on since, they still need a bit of breakin, running them full range shows they are still a bit rough around the edges.   I will listen more critically once they are properly broken in.

Best,
Ed

Ed:

if these were bone stock drivers,  give them at least 200 hrs of break-in before final assessment - and you needn't be all that gentle - but do keep in mind that they will have earlier limits in max SPL and LF extension before running into compression and losing coherency than a larger driver might
