Liebert UPS units without ANY fans
« on: 14 Apr 2012, 08:24 pm »
Hi guys,
My first post here and I actually got here after doing google for Liebert and fan noise.
I saw the few posts here, guys replacing the stock fan(s) with some silent aftermarket units, but I wonder if anyone tried to run the unit with the fan disconnected.
I have GXT2 and the thing is very loud - as we know....but reading over the specs in the manual it seems the unit should work OK up to 75 or even 95F.
I actually disconnected the fan and first day just let it stay there with no load (nothing connected to it) - the unit never even got past normal room temperature of 70F.
I guess it may get hotter when running with some load but still wondering if this is relatively safe for the unit.
Has anyone tried that? I guess as long as I don't trip the safety level and shut down the unit I am not causing anything bad...well...maybe just wearing the batteries a little prematurely... after all, these units were designed to go into a server racks with hot servers and switches going on for 24/7 all around generating massive amount of heat.

PS: I have it on its side with plenty space to "breathe" and far from my tube amp which generates heat.

Thanks!

Just as FYI ...I used a Fluke min/max to measure the hottest spot when unit is on w/o the fan.
The lowest temp was 31C and the highest was 42C.
This is in a living room with comfortable ambient temp with plenty of room around the unit but no active cooling of any sort (no fans in or outside, nothing blowing air on the unit, not near a window or door to allow for extra air movement).

The highest load was 2 bars (50% max).

disclaimer; I am not saying you should do the same and you will be OK...your unit may overheat and I can't be responsible for it....I am just describing my experience.
