Soundproofing
« on: 21 Mar 2012, 11:16 am »
Hello.. Trying to get some thoughts on sound proofing a dedicated listening room to be built. The room will be upstairs. I have seen some things on soundproof Sheetrock and Acousticgard Genie clips.

Any thoughts and information would be appritiated.

Thanks.

Better to post this in the 'Acoustics' circle my friend.

That way more can enjoy the info posted...

For some ideas on soundproofing however, look at my systems page  :thumb:.

Best,
Anand.

..also include some Greenglue based laminations in the wall and ceiling assemblies...have used that product numerous times and always had stellar results...

...btw the Acoustigard Genie clip system is the best product in its field, with better performance in the all important low frequency area than its competition...and very well priced...another product we have used many times with outstanding results...

...the big trick is to sweat the details...especially limit ( or if possible eliminate ) all perforations of the wall/ceiling assemblies that you have constructed...if possible, surface mount everything, including electrical systems...oh, and be sure to caulk/seal the wall assemblies securely to window/door openings and the floor...any leakage, no matter how small, will greatly compromise the hard work you will put into your wall/ceiling assemblies...

...and of course use Roxul in behind all of the wall/ceiling assemblies...its heavier than fiberglas and therefore yields better transmission-loss performance...and spec a good solid core door, or go studio style and use two doors on a split frame...

...good luck...

Cheers

First off, is the floor of the upstair room concrete or wood (like most North
American houses). If it is wooden, the first thing to do is to soundproof/vibration-proof the floor.

Any recommendations on how to best soundproof a wooden floor? As my living room is my listening room, these need to be unobtrusive for me (like something I could put under a rug or couch etc). I already have an Auralex SubDude for the subwoofer.

Effective soundproofing (especially at sub-woofer frequencies) takes lots of heavy building materials and carpentry work.

For the room structural reinforcement or what? Want to be more specific?

If it is yr house, make sure you have the ceiling of the ground floor (i.e. bottom of the floor of yr listening room) properly finished. A finished ceiling will offer a sealed void underneath yr listening room floor, acting as a sorta sound-proof layer to stop noise coming up from downstair.

Ideally, the whole floor of yr listeing room should be wall-to-wall carpetted with thick spongy rubber underlay so that the vibration/noise caused by foot-drops can be eliminated. This also acts as a noise insulator layer vs noise coming up from below floor.

The equipment rack, loudspeakers, all cables should be 'floated' or lifted off the floor instead of seating direct on it.

The subwoofer box, the worse floor vibration generator, should be also 'floated' on the floor on spikes or the like lifters.

FYI, my auido den is 10ft below grade down in my house basement with concrete floor, strong & sound. Yet the whole floor is wall-to-wall carpetted with thick cushion underlay & ALL my audio stuffs are lifted from the carpetted floor, including my 10" active sub.  I also have a thick carpet rug placed in beween my sweet spot & the pair of front loudspeakers.

Dr. Geddes has a book on the subject.  His room is quite soundproof as I've been there, so his techniques work.

Darn, I thought that the Soundproofing Company (link above) had pages and pages of instructions and drawings.  But it appears that the pages are for customers only.

Ethan, I just found the link to the older articles, but the "Solutions - How to Soundproof a Floor" page,  has no real information for "cheap-Jack".
