Suitable pre for my new Air-Tight ATM-300 amplifier
« on: 15 Jul 2012, 07:47 am »
I have recently acquired an Airtight 300B amplifier and looking for a suitable Pre.
I have a small room with trated walls and I plan to use Tannoy or Altech older vintage drivers to mate with this amplifier.

I have tried the EAR-864 and DIY hifi Supply Tram 2 and I was not getting good imaging and tonal quality was not to my liking.

Appreciate if any ATM-300 users can chip in and offer some advice.

Hi Vinay, and Welcome.  :D

That's a nice looking amp you have. Congratulations.

I also have a 300B amp and I find that it does very well with a passive transformer volume control (tvc) because there is so much gain in the amp. I have not heard the Airtight, but your amp's input sensitivity looks to be about the same as mine, so I thought I would suggest it. Too much gain can give a confused, or congested sound, and maybe that is what you are experiencing with an active pre-amp.

Have you tried the direct input feature on your amp yet?

If yes, is it loud enough but just not dynamic sounding? (lack of force and drive, or wimpy sounding)

What are your source components?

I have got two source setuo
One is PC with ASUS Xonar Essence STX and other is my JVC DD TT with YS Audio Concerto Plus Phono.
Speaker are Tannoy monitor Gold 12: in rectanular GRF and I am also building Altec 604-8G based cabinets.

Which passive pre-amp is recommended with the Air Tight amp

I am getting an ATE-2 pre-amp from Air tight but its higher priced than my budget. Is it a good one if I am able to stretch my budget. Any feedback or reviews on the ATE-2
