« on: 8 Mar 2012, 07:53 am »
Hello,

Please can you let me know if the 6.5'' bulet type phase plug megawoofers are the same as those with the round one !!
Speakers S/N's are 12724 & 12725.

Thank you in advance for the advise

Regards

Stelios

I asked the same question awhile ago and here is Brian's response.

"The blunt, wooden phase plug is found in the earlier 28oz magnet version of the 6.5" megawoofer for the RM30 and 626R.

The new 40oz magnet version has a bullet metal phase plug that also acts as a shorting ring for the pole piece.  You'll notice the plug extends slightly beyond the plane of the cone surround.  This is to preserve the phase plug "action" at full excursion, about 8mm.  We've had this for about 3 yrs now.

If you have the 28oz/ blunt phase plug, you can upgrade to the later 40oz/bullet plug version for $100ea. No crossover change required."

Hello Brax and thank you very much for your response.
Please, do you think thats its going to be a worth upgrade if i replace
the 6.5'' megawoofers with the new one's, taking into consideration that
the new ones have better Xmax - coil displacement (by about 8 mm, increase).
I drive my RM30M with big denali monoblocks 1200 wat/4 ohm/ch.
These speaker, to my my ears, have better control with big stable amplification. This might be A REASON to upgrade or NOT!!

Thanks in advanced

Kind regards

Are you running a sub with your 30s? The 40 oz driver is very good but if your using a sub, the improvement may be minimal.

No i am running them straight forward. Besides i have asked Brian and his response was
'' would not switch out the woofers'' .

To be honest, to my ears and not only, the older megawoofers were faster the the newer ones, while compare them with a fiiends same speakers, but with different amplification. (i was driving them with the PBN mono's and he was driving them with the big atmasphere's mono's.)
The only issue i might consider swiching them is because of the higher ouyput power of my amps, if this is a case.

Finally my listening room is 8 by 5 meters and the bass is still great as is.

I think a better upgrade would be the Series 2, where you change the side firing woofer to a PR. This should give you better low end output.
