Packing a tonearm

Hello
Any ideas how to secure a tonearm for shipping without the original box

I've tried to do a bit of surfing on the net but not much comes up

You could use an oversize box and solid foam packing inside the walls to keep it from collapsing or getting crushed. Remove the counterweight, headshell, and loose hardware. Bubble wrap everything including the arm and separate as necessary. Fill up all empty space with packing so there is no possibility of movement. Use a second larger box and put packing between them.

I have used PVC pipe sections with a slot cut in one end for the mount, it's easy, super cheap and secure. The arm being wrapped with bubble wrap inside of the pipe section with the whole thing then properly packed in a box.

I've mailed a few now and I always build a frame to mount the arm to.  I'll see tonight if I took any pictures.  Trying to explain how I did it is tough.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay in responding.  I did look and don't have a pic anymore.  I usually photograph the packing of all my delicate shipments in case there is an issue in transit.  Seems that pic was purged at some point.

What I do is build a frame that fits perfectly inside a box.  The frame has a solid bottom that I actually mount the arm to and a solid top.  I have some of that very firm pink sheet insulation left over that works perfectly.  So, I cut two sheets to the length and width dimensions of the box.  Then I cut a bunch of 1.5" X 1.5" bars that make up the frame.  I cut a hole into the first sheet for the arm.  Then I duct tape bars to the underside to lift up this sheet and allow room for the bottom half of the mounting screw, cable, etc.  Then using more bars, I build up from the corners and attach the second sheet as a top to the frame.  This frame then slides into the box.  The idea is that no part of the arm touches the box and the only part of the arm that touches the frame is the mount.  All the delicate pieces like the arm lift and headshell are completely suspended within the frame.  Of course, all loose parts are removed and the arm is tied to the arm rest so it can't come loose.  I usually use a piece of soft foam with a hole in it, through which I stick the armtube for added support.  While building the frame, try to think like this 'if the box is dropped on this corner what would happen?' and support accordingly.  It will take you at least an hour but isn't your peice of mind worth it?  Hope this helps!

Hi Eric
Thanks for the explanation but it sort of went over my head

Can you simplify your explanation above i'm not quite sure what you're doing
when I put down the strips where does the tonearm lie
Sorry I reread it a few times not quite sure on the concept

Here's a diagram:

You can make this out of wood if that's what you have handy.  Don't forget to remove everything that can come loose and tie that arm to the arm rest!!!!
