Hook up only 2 speakers to a 5.1 avr
« on: 27 Feb 2012, 06:24 pm »
I have a HK AVR 154. Can I hook up only two floor speakers to the front outputs and not hook up any speakers to the center, surround and sub outputs?

I know this will produce stereo only. My concern is, will I damage the reciever?

Short answer is no, you'll do no harm to the reciever at all. But you'll be missing the other channels with surround material, unless you set your reciever to blend the other channels into the front L & R, which there should be a setting for.

You can damage a tube based amplifier this way, but not a solid state amplifier.  So the answer as Barry said is no, you're perfectly safe.

You will need to configure your AVR with only front and left speakers, but after that you should be good.  The AVR when so configured should mix the surround channel data into 2-channel only.

On your receiver you'll want to use the Analog Bypass Mode by selecting the analog audio inputs, setting the tone controls to Tone Mode Out, and the Surround Mode off.  This will bypass all the DSP and speaker size controls so you can use the receiver like a stereo unit.

No, I'm not an all seeing God of receivers, I read the PDF manual online.

Just did such at my nephew's house.  Wire your speakers to the 2 channel "stereo" outputs.  Then you will get at least all of the front info, but not surround.  Make sure to select the "stereo" output mode on the receiver also.

Depending on the source it may be better to connect to the digital inputs and use the aVR DACs. Sounds better that way with my Marantz AVR.
