Tang Band W3-319SF 3" Full Range Driver
« on: 23 Dec 2011, 08:56 pm »
I have been itching for a new small speaker project so I pickd up 4 of these:

I was thinking about building something similar to this:

These would be for a nearfield setup in a small office, low volume levels.

My question is what would you build using these drivers?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Wishing happy holidays to all!

Best,
Ed

Are you going to build a set of two enclosures or a set of four enclosures? Not a heck of a lot you can do if you want desktop, nearfield. If you want any bass, whatever you build will have to be ported.
I actually bought 30 of them a few years ago with the intent of making some full range line arrays.  I later modified my plans and scaled it down a bit with the hopes of making a five piece type of home theater loudspeaker setup using all matching drivers. I'm about half way there. The W3-319s I have were an earlier version. Some of them were a bit ragged in the treble region and they were inconsistent from driver to driver.

That second pic isn't showing up for me Ed.

I saw some impressions posted over on the Parts Express forum about one of the full range Tang Band drivers, might want to peek over there.

Thanks for the reply.  I will be building a single pair of speakers.  The speaker shown above would utilize all for drivers for a single pair.

Given the limitations of 3" drivers I am open to all alignments although my preferences lean to OB.   Of course I realize I would never achieve any bass going OB so a ported design is proabably my best (and maybe only) hope to achieve any bass.  If you look at the design above the front firing driver is OB with an upward facing driver in a ported enclosure for the bass.

Best,
Ed

Hi Roscoeiii.  Thanks, I have redone the pic, hopefully it shows up now.  I have checked out the PE forums, I found a couple of items concerning these drivers but not much info, simple BR boxes is what they have tried.

I also considered building something similar to these Omegas:

Add a second woofer and bypass the lower woofer with a cap value that is between 47uF and 75uF. I usually end up with a 62uF or  75uF myself.

So wire it like this:

+_________________+
                                     }
                                     } top woofer
                                     }
                                    -
                                    I
                                    I
                   _________+
                  I                   }
                cap                } lower woofer
                  I                   }
-________I__________-

If you think it through then you will see that the upper frequency ranges pass through the cap and to the upper woofer only as that is a path of much less resistance for the upper ranges. But, as frequency decreases then the cap is more resistive and both woofer share the low frequency load together. Since with woofers are in phase and working together then they can share the same air space too. This will double power handling without causing any comb filtering effects that would disrupt the response.

Ed, I look forward to seeing how your TB project turns-out...better yet, watching it develop!  Have you settled on a design yet?

I have not decided on what type of alignment I will use with these.  I have them mocked up using cardboard boxes and baffles right now.  Danny has played with these (see my thread on the GR Research circle) and has found two in a ported enclosure using an inductor on the lower driver to work well so I will likely be working with the drivers using something resembling that scheme.

I was curious, have you had an opportunity to experiment with these drivers?  If so, how did they turn out?
