What preamps have no, or very little gain?
« on: 7 May 2004, 12:42 am »
All:

I would like to have a remote controlled pre that kicks ass, is not too expensive, and has no gain.  I was thinking of a Bent, but do they add warmth?  I have enough warmh as it is, I just want a more linear pre.  I could go active if I could find one with just a minute amount of gain.

Thanks,

B

You might take a look at the Placette remote volume control. It's a passive using Vishay resistors and is supposedly very clean. I havn't heard one but do know a gentlemen who owns one and is very happy with the performance. Not inexpensive at $1K tho.

No added ANYTHING on the silver tranny Bent...it is like No(h) pre-amp at all, except for volume control and source switching.

Highly recommended

Here is the only unity gain active preamp offered for regular sale that I know of:

http://www.decware.com/linestage/zp1.htm

Here are some low gain units:

http://hollowstate.netfirms.com/line2.htm

http://www.transcendentsound.com/preamp%20kit.htm

Your options expand with DIY:

www.diycable.com  look for  the DACT active units. The pre amp is configurable for 0/6/9 dB gain.

www.welbornelabs.com   look at the site map for his projects catalog (not his kit or parts catalogs)  in it he has a buffer amp that can be configured as a zero gain pre.  Claims it sounds better than Corey Greenberg's
famous Stereophile design.

http://hometown.aol.com/kevinc927/myhomepage/linestage.html  a pricey kit that uses highly regarded iron.  Probably the lowest gain for a tube stage you are likely to find.

Happy hunting,
Rob

Not sure of your budget, but FT Audio now has a remote option for their "little wonder"  Probably about $600

I own the Placette and it is quite good.

I am selling it though because I want a balanced preamp and more than a single input/output.

If you are interested, let me know.

Regardless, I don't think you can wrong with either the Placette or Bent preamps.

Dude I am sorry!

I just re-read your post and noticed I missed you were looking for remote controlled pre amps!

If you are inclined towards DIY,  here is a remote volume control that can be inserted into any one of the projects I listed in my first reply.

I've heard the Decware and the Transcendant.  The Decware is neutral (I couldn't hear it adding/subtracting anything from the music).

The Transcendant seemed to add gain, bass, and warmth.  Doesn't seem to be what you need.
