Horn Loaded Subwoofer with the SW-12-04?

Hello everyone!

I have been thinking about buying one of Danny's 12" servo sub kits for a while now, and after seeing them in action in the Super-Vs last Saturday, that did it. BTW, the Super-Vs are the best sounding speakers I have ever heard. I bought Danny's demo pair of OB-5 and they are no slouch, but the the Super-Vs take them hands-down. Thanks's for the time and the demo Danny!

I am considering building a horn loaded enclosure for the servo 12 woofer. The box for this thing will be HUGE but I am really curious how it will sound. And by big, I mean something like 19" x 56 x 62 inches, double folded. I have attached a screenshot of the predicted in-room response with 1 watt input.

Does anybody have any experience with folded horns designs?

Danny, do you think the closed-loop control work OK on a horn load or will that somehow mess up the tuning of the circuit?

I guess if this doesn't work out, I can put it in a sealed enclosure. It would make a good bottom end for the OB-5s or a kick-ass computer sub. :D

Anyway, I am curious to hear what you guys think.

What horn loading does is increase SPL at the tuning frequency of the horn.

This lets you use a high sensitivity woofer that might not play real low, and amplifying it's low end response with horn loading to get more extension out of it.

Also if you are looking for really high SPL in a given narrow range then horn loading will get you that too.

The drawbacks are typically quality and linearity. The horn usually consists of large un-braced panels. So if resonating noisy panels are not a problem then don't worry about that. If sound quality is an issue though then that might be a problem.

Also, the servo subs already play flat to whatever you want them to play down to. So you don't really have anything to gain in that direction.

I tend to lean more towards quality and less towards quantity. If I need quantity then I tend to use more of them. Or in other words using more woofers designed for absolute quality to get the added quantity.

And I am glad you guys enjoyed the visit. You are welcome any time.

If you like the Super V's so much why not just buy the demo pair that Danny has for sale and be done?

I am a big fan of horns.  That said, Danny's servo-subs in the open baffle are so good, I can't imagine why you'd want to horn-load them.

With the built-in amps you will get all the SPLs you could reasonably demand - even at the lowest octaves - along with the ability to adjust the output for your room.

Yes, I have thought about that. It would be a bear to get all the resonances out of panels that size. I have read of people building horns nearly that size using 7/16 OSB!

I don't expect it to sound nearly as good as the OB subs. I am just curious about how it will sound and how much output it will have. Hell, I won't even be able to fit it in the house! I am building the standard sealed enclosure for the real sub.
