Upgrade from Stratos Extreme to Kismet?
« on: 6 Jan 2012, 10:11 pm »
I wanted to know if anyone has upgraded their Stratos amps to the Kismet boards.  If so, how did the sound change?

I have a pair of Stratos Mono Extreme SE's (red boards).  I have questionable transistor in one amp that I've known about for some time.  On rare occasions, that amp goes into protection and resets itself in about 20-30 seconds.  It's been happening more often, so the amps are going back to Klaus soon.  So I was wondering if I should be taking advantage of the situation and upgrading the boards or whatever?

Thanks.

It is a noticeable upgrade.  Tighter bass, but the most improvement is in the midrange.  Much more liquid, vocals are incredible.  I have the Kismets in the Stratos case with additions (symphonic line cap and wire upgrade).  Self plug - Mine may be for sale, thinking of changing all of my amps.  Not due to problems with the Odysseys!!!

Can I ask what you're moving to for amps?

There in lies the question of the day.

I demo'd a Bryston 4B (nice driver control, not as warm as the Odyssey's); Bel Canto 500M's should be in the house in a week or so, and would like to try a Sanders Magtech.

I'd like to stick with Monos and solid state, plus keep the cost at/under $5000 for the pair.  That leads to the most likely candidate being the Bel Canto's, but need to hear them first.
