For my albums, I use the Ikea Expedit system, too, tho with the dark brown stain as my walls are rather dark.  Always the decorator conscience, you know, but don't have it anchored.  Rather it is out from the wall behind it about three inches- the cubes are 14' in depth- and 4' plus from the back of my chair.  As the IE system is open backed, I'm shooting for as much diffusion off the back wall as possible.  For that reason I leave some open space within the cubes, too.  I file A to Z but not by artist.  Looking for an album helps keep me aware of albums I might otherwise forget that I have.

jimdgoulding - That's why I keep a log book (a notebook actually). It's easy to forget what you have if your record collection is large. I keep a list on the computer too, but I keep the book with the albums since my computer is in the other room. Each time I get a new album, I log it in on the computer, then print out the page and put it in the notebook. How do you file A to Z if you don't go by the Artist's name? Do you arrange them by music style, such as J for Jazz, R for rock, etc?

P.S. - I hope Murphy's Law doesn't come into play if you have your Expedit freestanding, especially if there's more than one person in the room and someone loses their balance or slips....

I store my LPs by genre and then alphabetically in 3 locations. My favorites are in my studio and the rest are in the room adjacent on metal wire-form shelves.

I used to log my LPs onto an Excel spreadsheet list, but my insurance man recommended that I take a picture of each and every LP for proof of ownership.

So, now I take a snap shot instead.

My insurance man suggested the same, but with a 10K piece collection? that can take a while!

So far I've taken photos of the expensive stuff, like the original Blue Notes, Prestige, New Jazz, Dial, etc.

Sigh, ...

Wayner,
Taking pictures is a great idea. People should take pictures of EVERYTHING they own for insurance purposes. I was robbed once, but criminals usually go for items that are more valuable, and easy to carry out (not to say there aren't valuable albums). The average robber isn't going to waste time going through your albums. If you have extremely valuable albums and you have them stolen, then the robber probably knows you! Of course a fire is a different story, but how do you put a value on a ton of albums? If I had a nice color printer, I'd take pics of my albums and put the pictures in my log book. That would be way cooler than just having a list, albeit a more expensive way of doing things!

Spence, hi.  I put A artists regardless of genre in A cube, and so on, but not alphabetically by artist anymore than that.  I just have em all in there in no order.  It's not something I would recommend, it just works for me.  If someone were to slip they could only push the cabinet in the direction of the wall which would hold the cabinet upright.

By genre here....New Age (quite a few I have of these over time) isn't stuck in Jazz as I have seen it in a few record shops over time...it's in a separate New Age area.

My dividers are Rock / Heavy Metal / Jazz / New Age / Reggae / Classical / Opera / Country / Soundtracks / Comedy

I have separate sub-sections within Jazz, New Age (really just George Winston in here) and Classical for my cherished piano solo albums.

I go simple. Alphabetical. got em in an ikea book shelf and its virtually filled up. i know i will have to eventually divide by pop/jazz/classical but i don't normally search for a certain "type" of music. I'm either looking for a certain band/artist or just waiting to see what catches my eye.

I may however make an "audiophile" section for the best sounding stuff.
