Tube Preamp Issue
« on: 29 Dec 2011, 06:03 pm »
I am a newbie to the Bryston Circle. My current system:

Bryston BCD-1
Dynaudio C1
Bryston 4BSST
Doge 8 Clarity Preamp

I connected the Doge to the system and everything was fine. I put the Bryston in standby followed by the Doge. The Doge sent DC charge which turned on the Bryston and the C1s received a jolt of DC power which cooked the woofers. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? The Bryston tech mentioned to have the coupling caps checked in the preamp.

Some pre-amps send DC to connected components during power down.  Another notable example is Cary Audio tube pre-amp.  I used to have an SLP-98P which always sent DC to my non Cary Audio amp during power down.  Just replace your pre-amp with a Bryston pre-amp.

There may be sOmething wrong with the preamp. If I recall, they use output capacitors which should prevent a DC output. Did it do this in both channels?
We have customers running our preamps (tubes) into Bryston without any problems and many Bryston owners are using tube preamps.
An odd one for sure.

Yes, it did this to both channels. I purchased the Doge from Pacific Valve and I will be calling them tomorrow.

They are good people over there so I don't foresee any problems working with them.

I talked to the people at Pacific Valve tonight. They were very helpful. The preamp must be turned on for 2 minutes before the amp is turned on. And, during shut down the amp is to be turned off prior to the preamp.

So RIES, are you then on the hook for repair bill for the C1s?  Users have the responsibility of reading the manual but manufacturers should design products to have some fail-safes.  That's a shame about the woofers gettting toasted.

Okay. That makes sense. It sounds like you will have to turn the amplifiers off completely before powering down the preamp. Same for powering up. You will want to turn the preamp on and let it warm up before turning on the amplifier.

SoundGame, I have already had the woofers replaced at my expense, but it is a valuable lesson.

Experience is a very good teacher.  Enjoy the preamp and the tunes!

"The preamp must be turned on for 2 minutes before the amp is turned on. And, during shut down the amp is to be turned off prior to the preamp."

A valuable lesson. I learned it the first time I placed a tubed pre in the system with my 4B ST, nothing fried, but the howl emanating from my speakers froze me in fear.

I now follow the above guideline at all times.
