Diffusors fins, the thick and thin of it all
« on: 10 Dec 2011, 02:20 am »
Curious as to why a lot or most diffusor fins are quite thin,
and a few I have checked out seem to be at least an inch or more thick.
Is there a difference in how sound waves scatter, are the thin fins the better way to go or is it just cosmetics, cost ect.

The effect is based on the well depths and widths so the separators have to be as minimal as possible.

Big R,thanks for that.
Should have mentioned that I was looking at Gik's QRD's(thick),Q7D(thin),SRL(prime 37 quite thick) then realtraps(thin)but with bass trapping.
Want to try diffusion on my partial backwall, but doing all this research is .
Thanks for the links, going to do some more reading.

Interesting read on those two links.
I see from the diffuse Christmas tree that from N-3 up to N-37 that all the wells have the thin fins.
I also see that the sound waves would be more concentrated(on each well) more with those fin walls than without them.
I could also imagine that that alone would make quite a bit of difference in scattering,a lot more control perhaps.

In that reading, perhaps other places I have forgotten, there are certain target frequencies you can reach practically with these types of diffusers.  Of course, keep in mind that higher prime numbers are more expensive to make, are physically larger, and harder to mount.  I have Gik, Real Traps, Auralex, RPG, and DIY Prime 53's.

If you stand in front of a diffusor with or without fins it becomes very clear what the difference is.

With fins - Sound can cancel in the wells which will give a more focused sound.
Without fins - The sound "spreads" out much wider.

There is no wrong or right but just a difference. Well actually the fins would have a higher diffusion coefficient where the non fin would have a higher scattering coefficient. Still no right or wrong.

Somewhere in my endless research on this topic, I read that fins were designed with the use of "arrays" in mind, that is; multiple units, to somehow mitigate their interaction with each other.  Can anyone shed more light on this?
