How to widen the sweet spot?
« on: 13 Dec 2011, 02:30 am »
It is sweet but it's not very wide.  I've tried moving the speakers around but I'm limited on space.  Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!  :D

1) Aim the speakers so they cross about 12" in front of your nose at the listening position, perhaps even a bit more.  The speakers can be toed in as much as 45 degrees.

2) Sit on the floor, or nearly so, about 6-8" raised above it max.

3) Aim the speakers directly ahead, perfectly perpendicular to their placement axis.  (Yes, this is the opposite of suggestion #1, different things work in different situations)

4) Move the listening position closer to the speaker plane (Again, the opposite of suggestion #1)

5) If using bookshelf speakers, get rid of the stands and put them on the floor, tilted upwards anywhere from 5 to 45 degrees, wooden supports work best.

You can mix or eliminate any of the suggestions, e.g. sitting on the floor works for all the positions.

"Widen", so that you don't have that dreaded "head in the vice" situation, or are you wanting to envelop a five across home theater seating situation?
What's your definition of "widen"?

Although, what Letitroll said was good advice. Use all of it, but different amounts of each piece at different times, and any combination of each one to achieve what you're looking for. There are no hard and fact rules, you room is different than ours.

Good luck finding what you seek. At best, you find it a pleasurable journey.

Roy, at what distance do you sit from your speakers and how far apart are they and how near to side walls, if any?

Thanks guys for all your input.

Well, right now I've got what seems like about a foot or so sweet spot where the music is spread across the entire front.  Moving to the left or right of that location, the singer or instrument appears to be coming from that side.  The it doesn't sound like a stage layout.

I've tried some of you suggestions already, Letitroll98, but not all of them.

Jim, I'm guessing about a 12 foot triangle.

I'll keep working with speaker placement and post any significant changes.  Thanks!

If you are dependent on only a single pair of loudspeakers, your options are limited.

Thought I would let you guys know that I ended up moving the speakers closer together almost pointing straight ahead.  As a result, the so called sweet spot is now very wide and I hear instruments all across the soundstage.  Not exactly 3D, but a nice presentation nonetheless.  I like what I'm hearing now.

Thanks for everyone's advice.  :green:

How far behind the apex of the equilateral triangle are your ears in your listening spot? If your speakers are 12' apart, your ears "should" be further away than 12' from the speakers. Try distances "around" 1 1/2 times the distance between the center of your speakers. Glad to hear you're making progress.  :D

The speakers are approx 7' apart and my seated position is 10' or 11' right now.  But I can get up and go further back and it sounds about the same.
