NAD HT Power Amp
« on: 25 Oct 2011, 12:23 am »
Any opinions out there on a power amp from NAD for my HT? It will be a 5 channel power amp and I will mate with a Yamaha Aventage 700 AVR as a preamp. Right now undecided if mating that to Thiel CS3 fronts's, CS2's rears and a Focal 700 center along with a HSU Research sub, or the same sub with Magnepan front and rears with the Focal 700 C. I will apreciate your input.

I thought NAD had stopped making 5 channels amps; is this an older or used model?

NAD is a little under the radar these days, especially for HT, but IMO they have always made good sounding, well built equipment. FTR, I've never heard any of their HT gear, only stereo.

The NAD T955 is supposed to be pretty good but if it was me wanting to drive Thiel or Maggies I'd look for more current like a Krell S1500.

Hey Dan, Mr Peabody, yes it is an NAD T955. Should be shipping in the next few days. The Yamaha 700 is doing a very credible job of pushing the CS2's and focal center. Based on my NAD experiences, the Thiels will jump for joy with the power envelope design, (shoot my HiFi systems Von Shweikerts loooove my NAD C375BEE.) We will see what happens, still leaning towards a pair of either 1.5 Thiels or another pair of CS2's as surrounds if I can find them at a reasonable price. Let's see what I find on Craigslists, here, Audiogon ... shoot  fleamarkets!!!

Well, careful what you wish for ... the NAD T755 delivered today, will hook up tomorrow and see what happens, but also ... found a very reasonably priced in good shape pair of Thiel CS3's ... will pick them up Sunday. 3's become fronts, 2's become surrounds and the Focal 700 remains the center. Can't wait to hear what this sounds like! Perhaps the first two movies will be the standards ... Independance Day and Star Trek!! Let you know how this works out.

Well all the parts are in place. One of the CS3's had a replacement "Optimus" by The Shack midrange and a "I have no clue what that was" tweeter. I called Gary at Thiel and he promptly sent me the real Thiel parts. My guys at Speaker Exchenge handled the repairs. Brought them home, hooked everything up and played my music standard, King Crimson "In the court of the Crimson King". I talk to the wind was incredible, the texture of Greg Lakes voice was amazing. The I listened to Epitah and was mesmerized! By the way, I played the recently released, 40th anniversary DTS DVD and Mr. Fripp still has it! We then played the intro to Apocalypse Now ... to say I am thrilled with the Frankesntein I have created is an understatement!! Thiels are incredibel, I don't care if the are 30 plus years old, I will put them up against anything out there. The CS2's do an amazing job as surrounds and the NAD does not even break a sweat driving these bad boys!!!  :thumb:
