AVA/Grado Gold Longhorn okay on my turntable?
« on: 7 Dec 2011, 03:27 am »
I've got a SOTA Nova Series V turntable with SME 309 tonearm.  Does anyone know if the Gold Longhorn cartridge will work ideally on this rig?  The turntable has an AC motor, and the tonearm effective mass is 9.5 grams.  I can't find the cartridge weight on the AVA web site, so I'm having difficulty in determining the theoretical resonance frequency with this combination.  Also, I am concerned about the width of the Longhorn stabilizer bar because I have the SOTA Reflex record clamp.  This clamp covers most of the record label in use, and I wonder if the cartridge stabilizer bar might hit the clamp when tracking the inner record grooves.  Any insight would be appreciated.  Thanks!

The Sota Comet is on my list of compatible turntables. So that  makes me think that Sota has shielded it's motor, or located it in a good location, relative to the cartridge travel.

Weight of the Grado Longhorn is 7.5 grams. Length of the Longhorn is 1.5" overall, or .75" from center of cartridge to edge.

I own a SOTA Comet and use the SOTA reflex clamp. With my Longhorn, occasionally ,it hits the clamp at the end of a LP side (not always; depends on the LP). I'm the type that usually jumps up right when the side finishes, as I don't like my styli spinning for no reason on those innermost grooves.  Aside from that small caveat with the reflex clamp, the Longhorn is a great choice. Of course if you dont use the clamp, it's a non-issue.

Wayner,
I have a Rega P1 TT with an Audio-Technica AT-95 cart.  I was thinking about getting the AVA Longhorn Gold,  but Frank said that I might not be able to use it due to "hum".  He said to check with you.

I read other blogs on the subject and found it to be 50/50 for/against.

It will hum. However, I am experimenting with some new material that is "claimed" to reduce EMF. It's a Mumetal type alloy less the copper. I'm told all the copper does is make it malleable, but call me the great skeptic.

The point I may make on the Rega is that the motor is DC, but I believe the culprit is the stepdown transformer.

There used to be a manufacturer who fixed a similar problem with H-K TTs by relocating the Xformer to an external box away from the cartridge. Think they were from Minnesota somewhere IIRC.   Wonder if the TT in question would be a good candidate for such a mod...
