My new HT2-TL's in dark burl walnut
« on: 4 Dec 2011, 09:57 pm »
I want to thank Jim, his team and the entire Salk family. I ordered my HT2-TL’s without ever seeing or hearing any of the Salk speakers. Without Jim’s guidance and all of the information provide on this forum, I would have never purchased the HT2-TL’s and I would have missed out on some incredible speakers.  The Salk experience has been both educational and enjoyable.

I chose the front ported HT2-TL’s. Jim recommended the HT2-TL’s over the HT3 due to my limited space and room restrictions. He felt the HT2-TL’s would be easier and more forgiving in room placement. The HT2-TL’s replace my front ported Sonus Faber Concerto monitor speakers which I had since the late 90’s. I removed the monitors and set the HT2- TL’s in their place. The HT2-TL’s with the front port fit my system and the room extremely well IMO. I’ll play with my limited placement options I have after I get more familiar with the speakers. Right out of the box, the HT2-TL’s have brought my system up to a new level.

I thought I’d post a few photos. Jim did a fantastic job with the veneer. The burl pattern wraps around the entire speaker.  Jim nailed the look I was aiming for.

Yes, I have an area rug in front of the speakers. My system is set up in one half of a room that is roughly 19' x 23' x 8' with opening to adjoining rooms. I was not planning on putting anything under the cones, the speakers sit on a solid tile/concrete floor and the speakers are sounding great. Is there something I should consider putting under the cones? What are the benefits of putting another material under the cones? I set the speakers in place and never even noticed the direction of the tweeters until I started taking photos. The speakers fill the room nicely IMO and I rarely sit in one spot for critical listening. The music sounds great throughout the space. Does the direction of the tweeter have that much of a noticable affect?

Here a photo of the top and side of the speaker showing a better view of how the burl wraps the speaker. I think Jim did an incredible job.

They look like keepers and they sound incredible don't they.
What are your sources? I see a turntable.

They are amazing speakers. My system is set up for both 2 channel and HT. I listen to 2 channel the majority of the time and I rarely use the HT. My 2 channel portion includes:
Belles 350A Reference Power amp, Conrad Johnson PV15 preamp, Phonomena II phono preamp, Oppo BDP-95 Universal Blu-Ray player, VPI Classic 1 TT w/Lyra Delos cartridge, Morrow MA4 IC and Audioquest Bedrock SC. The HT2-TL's have seemed to pull the entire system together IMO and I'm extremely happy with the Belles 350A/HT2-TL combination.

I believe Jim and Dennis strongly recommend to put the twitter inside.
Great veneer. Top of my list!

Actually, I'm pretty agnostic on that.  Try it both ways and make up your own mind.  I doubt that it's a biggy either way.

I also have my HT2-TLs set up with the tweeters to the outside.  My thought was to maximize the soundstage width.  Also, although different designs, I remembered I preferred Magnepans with the tweeter to the outside (gave a wider soundstage), so I figured it was a good place to start.

dgriff, we seem to be in the minority with the tweeters out placement.

Before receiving my Salks I asked about the "proper" way to set them up (tweeters inside or outside).  Both Dennis and Jim said there was no "correct" way and to experiment with both and see what works best for me.

I must admit I haven't tried them with the tweeters on the inside, but the soundstage sounds great they way I have them set up so I'm not very motivated try them tweeters in (they're not that easy for me to move). :thumb:

I'd love to see those in person. Pictures just don't do these speakers justice  :thumb:

I have the older version with the LCY tweeters.  In my room, the speakers sounded much better with the tweeters on the outsides.

I have not tried them with the tweeters on the inside either. With HT2-TL's in my system and the tweeter on the outside, my soundstage is wider and deeper then ever before. I'll play with speaker placement after I get  more familar with my current setup, but for now I'm very happy with the tweeters out.

Why is the tweeter offset?

Check out reply #14 in this link:  http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=95642.msg956138#msg956138 "By moving the tweeter off center, you essentially create two different center to edge distances.  So there will now be diffraction artifacts at two different frequencies.  But sin[c]e they no longer reinforce one another, the amplitude of each is 1/2 of what they would have been if they were both at the same frequency."

Why is the tweeter offset?
